Does WHT use Windows or Linux servers? If its Linux, what flavour, and do you use a control panel for it?
Its sort of a long going survey by me and a mate, because he thinks that most bigger companies use Windows servers. I, however, think the opposite.

Lol.

Thanks

I believe it's on Linux servers as vBulletin does not run on Windoze type servers. Other then that, the configuration is pretty much confidential.

I would certainly agree with your friend that the majority of large companies use Windows server for most things. Normally it is down to a Manager or Director speaking to the IT guy and saying "What are our options?" - "Windows or Linux" - "Never heard of Linux, let's go for Windows".

The current company I support use Microsoft for everything apart from having 1 Linux box for the proxy, and even then it will be moving to ISA shortly.

Hehe. That sound be interesting. People like 1&1 appear to be Linux, and so do Google, so i think Linux is on top. I think Amazon is Linux powered too...

Depends which bit of the network you are talking about? Are you just talking about the webserver side of things? In which case there will be a lot more Linux servers used. But for local networks I would bet that most are using Windows Sever to look after things.

Local networks is understandable. I didnt make myself clear, sorry. I meant for the web end, which serves sites.

Bigger companies here in India go with Windows, linux is growing. Google hates Microsoft so they wont use.

I believe it's on Linux servers as vBulletin does not run on Windoze type servers. It doesn't? I thought all you needed was a reasonably fresh version of PHP and MySQL, both of which can run just fine on Windows.

vBulletin is perfectly well suited for Windows servers. That being said, I believe WHT/iNet properties operate on a flavor of Linux, but not for that reason ^^.

Why do GOogle hate MS?

What flavour of Linux, the_pm?

Are you talking about web hosting companies? Or web servers in general? It all depends on the web application...there's no definitive answer.

You can't just pick 1&1 (a web host concentrating on cheap hosting), Google (a competitor of Microsoft), and Amazon...and conclude that Linux is the winner. An O/S envrironment is chosen for many factors:

- How much money does your company have? Enterprise solutions from Microsoft cost a lot more than open source software.
- Do you require Oracle, or SQL Server, or something else?
- What programming language are you developing in? C#, VB, PHP, etc?
- Do you require frameworks like .NET?
- If you're Google and a direct competitor to Microsoft in the web industry, do you want to be caught relying on Microsoft's products? Of course not.

There are a hundred more reasons...

Thanks,
Nich

I can't say how accurate this is, but I have a hunch is quite accurate in this case.

The real question is how much BW does WHT use every month?

The real question is how much BW does WHT use every month?Take the Media Kit and try to crunch some numbers. The result won't be all that impressive. This is not YouTube. :)

Vbulletin works in any OS with the last version of PHP and MySQL.
WHT is hosting in a Linux Based Server right?

Ok. Someone has paid me a few $$, Although they are in Lindens as used in Second Life...

The board runs on a highly modified XBox 360. The reason the board slows down sometimes is because staff are playing games on the thing!

is WHT still running on RackSpace servers?

Hence the "Powered By Rackspace" under the search button.

Do a search on WHT for this as it has been discussed and revealed what WHT runs on - though they do not comment on their configuration/setup.
