View Full Version : Help me set up a new domain name on my virtual server

I'm currently hosting about 25 sites with a virtual server setup (one IP address for all domains).

The hosting company wants about $25 to set up a new domain name if they have to do it. They don't provide directions to do it myself!

We're talking standard Apache and Linux here, can you help? I am assuming (let me know if I'm way off) that I register a domain name and set the nameservers as with the rest of the domains I have hosted here, and change some files on the server, and that's it. Am I right?

What you need to do is set your domains DNS to that of the hosting company. (Usually, something like ns.whatever.com & ns2.whatever.com) Then simply add the domain to the server/ system.

I would assume that is a basic support question..... But like DnsLinux said change your nameservers at your domain name registrar (change to the hosting company nameservers) than add your domain and wait for it to propagate

Doesn't work. Doesn't the nameserver company have to set something up? Maybe I need to use a different nameserver... know of any free ones I can try out?

Maybe its because your hosting company has not added the domain to the server, so although the domains DNS are that of the host, the site wont be found if its not been added.

Basically, I think you want to avoid the $25 dollars charge for your host to do this (and rightly so!) and do it yourself, but it sounds as though you cant. I dont think you have a choice but to pay $25.
