This is more for the hosters amongst you, I'm not offering any webhosting as such. We (Idaya Ltd, UK based) develop a piece of software called ProVSD that creates Virtual Private Servers (on RedHat Linux) along the lines of those offered by ViaVerio (http://www.viaverio.com/products/vps.cfm) and DSVR (http://www.dsvr.co.uk). I am looking for feedback on a possible project to provide ProVSD Virtual Private Servers running the Plesk Server Administrator or CPanel4 software in each VPS. We are also open to other suggestions for specific control panels, billing tools etc (anything is possible really - we have a team of dedicated engineers), but we have recently sensed a growing demand for the PSA and CP4 configurations.

My question - Is this demand real enough to warrant the necessary commercial and technical development that would be involved? If you are interested then I would very much like to talk to you in more detail. Ultimately I will be looking for beta testers and comprehensive feedback but in return I'd be willing to offer discounted licenses to anyone who gets involved once the solution is fully launched.

If you're interested then get back to me and please feel free to leave your comments on the forum. If I can drum up plenty of support then the ball could start rolling very quickly indeed...

I would think this question should first be addressed with Dark Orb and Plesk since in creating a vitrual server enviroment you may violate their lic. Or they may require you to purchase one for each vitrual server.

I totally agree, in most cases you would have to purchase a license for each VPS running the software. This is given for most commercial software (we have integrated other products like RealServer and ColdFusion in the past in Virtual Private Servers), but as the software pricing is usually tiered this is not usually a barrier.

In some cases we have found it is possible (within the terms of the license) to purchase 1 license per physical server and invoke instances of that server for each VPS. Even better in some cases, the license allows you to install trial software for free which provides limited functionality, with the ability to purchase the software on an 'as required' basis. Most companies we talk to are more than happy to license an integrated solution...

We have not yet approached Plesk or DarkOrb, but we would do if we felt the demand for such a product was real. This is purely a factfinding mission for us, and the licensing is just one issue to be addressed if we decide to take it further.

I would think that would be key, if the fees were to be to high the project would never fly to start.
