![]() | View Full Version : How many AOL trial CD's do you have? fractiousws 07-24-2002, 04:46 AM I have around 7 lying around. I use some for coasters on my computer desk :D secludo 07-24-2002, 04:51 AM They send them to us in the mail constantly. My fiancé's grandma keeps giving them to us when she gets them, even though we don't use AOL and she knows that  They have hundreds of them at Blockbuster and sometimes we grab a handful to put in the microwave :D clocker1996 07-24-2002, 05:12 AM why in the microwave..? edude 07-24-2002, 05:13 AM lol, all my relos who dont know how to use a computer give them to me... but i'm on cable  F.N 07-24-2002, 05:26 AM I have just received one in the mail the other day! 1 months free plus your 4th month free! :spam: by post! I've been receiving them since I bought a mobile phone where they also sold AOL CDs. I've never asked to be on their postal list  shaunewing 07-24-2002, 06:58 AM Originally posted by tn3 I have just received one in the mail the other day! 1 months free plus your 4th month free! :spam: by post! I've been receiving them since I bought a mobile phone where they also sold AOL CDs. I've never asked to be on their postal list  Same, I received it on Monday. I threw out a whole box (literally a large box) of AOL CDs when I moved house a few months ago. There was a time where I was receiving up to 10 a week with various magazines, etc. I subscribed to. Now I've got about 20 or so lying around. I also have some AOL CDs from before they launched in Australia - "Confidential software. Not to be redistributed". I signed up to be a beta tester, but I never bothered with it. They do make good frisbees (as long as they dont hit concrete - they tend to smash into a million pieces)... I've thrown a few around :D --Shaun. mdrussell 07-24-2002, 07:25 AM You've never put a CD in the microwave?! Try it, it's good fun :D I have a couple of hundred of the damn things. hostjet 07-24-2002, 07:32 AM You've never put a CD in the microwave?! You're getting me curious... they don't explode or anything do they? :D It's quite funny with lightbulbs in the microwave - they tend to light up briefly... although if they're in there too long they blow up sending shards of glass everywhere. I haven't done it myself - just seen it on TV :) --Shaun. ubergeek22 07-24-2002, 07:48 AM Put a CD in for no more than 15 seconds, you'll see the whole thing spark up in a very impressive manner, and when you take it out the shiny layer will have cracked, but the surface will be smooth to touch. It doesn't damage your microwave, but if you leave the CD in too long the label can catch fire. Try it! fractiousws 07-24-2002, 08:26 AM Originally posted by ubergeek22 Put a CD in for no more than 15 seconds, you'll see the whole thing spark up in a very impressive manner, and when you take it out the shiny layer will have cracked, but the surface will be smooth to touch. Dude, sounds like you got to much free time on your ands :D fractiousws 07-24-2002, 08:34 AM WOW! The way it sparks up is impressive. Looks very cool. I was afraid to touch it due to my fright of electricity (been seriously electrocuted at least 4 times) Not the best odor in the world when you open the microwave. :unhappy: shaunewing 07-24-2002, 08:43 AM Originally posted by fractiousws WOW! I've potentially come close but the safety switch has kicked in cutting off the power each time. I did get a nasty jolt once when working on the PABX. I slipped when plugging in a new extension and touched the part that provides ring voltage to the phones - the jolt went right up through my arm and was quite painful (but didn't do any damage). --Shaun. Darth 07-24-2002, 09:22 AM 20 cds when i last checked  VoxKeysGtr 07-24-2002, 09:37 AM Zero...they go in the trash immediately, though now I'm tempted to do the microwave thing...hehehe :D Zutroy 07-24-2002, 10:38 AM My old boss used to have a bunch of them - probably 50-60 of them. TheGAME1264 07-24-2002, 11:29 AM A friend of mine collected over 200 of them, ground them into little pieces, glued the pieces together and made a tower case out of them. If any light reflects off it whatsoever, blindness can and most certainly will occur. Gotta love it. digiguy 07-24-2002, 11:32 AM I don't use it at all. :uzi: AOL davidb 07-24-2002, 11:43 AM I threw out about 10 on monday(along with about 80 windows 98 cds) Rotifer 07-24-2002, 11:52 AM I use some for coasters on my computer desk I do the same thing. You can also let your kids make mobiles out of them, throw them, eat them, make solar furnaces, etc. Synthetic 07-24-2002, 12:22 PM AOL trial CD's are included in a monthly magazine subscription of mine. I just throw them out each time they come my way... AL-Benjamin 07-24-2002, 12:37 PM me & a freind made a small coffee table from our cds. SoftWareRevue 07-24-2002, 12:43 PM Wait. . . . . Don't anybody move. Well, speaking of moving; I just moved a couple weeks ago. I'm going to find the AOL boxes and be back. **Looking for CDs to count. Be back in a few days. AL-Benjamin 07-24-2002, 12:53 PM we all ought to send the cds back to aol in an envelope with out a stamp. the postal charges would probably bankrupt aol :D ASTHost 07-24-2002, 04:37 PM Few months back I went to Sears and actually picked up a couple AOL CDs (Just for the heck of it). I have over 30 (Canadian and US versions) LOL. I'll keep them "SEALED" for the next 50 years and one day it may be worth something in eBay hahahahahhahahahahahahaha. Hey maybe in the next few years there could be technology where you can erase the DYE and write over them like CDRW (Who knows). LOL. Or simply mail them to Columbia House using their postage paid envelopes. WebCo 07-24-2002, 05:01 PM I'll have to look around the office ... hmmm maybe make one of those hanging mobile decorations .. pretty cool when the sun hits them. The latest came AOL CD came in a nifty metal tin ... now there's a "collector" item. Will have to put it with all my Apple ][e Beagle Bros. software! 24Host Tech3 07-24-2002, 05:20 PM I use them in the garden. Suspend them with a string, they turn in the breeze and annoy the birds. JSpired 07-24-2002, 05:22 PM I don't have any now; generally throw them out right away, though it looks like I'm missing out on some microwave entertainment. :) 24Host Tech3 07-24-2002, 05:32 PM the microwave thing sounds entertaining, but I get enough grief from the wife about the kids doing what I do... so I will have to pass on that, at least until they go out of town. :D fractiousws 07-24-2002, 06:51 PM Originally posted by 24Host Tech3 the microwave thing sounds entertaining, but I get enough grief from the wife about the kids doing what I do... so I will have to pass on that, at least until they go out of town. :D *makes whipping sound* :D j/k Gem Hexen 07-24-2002, 08:03 PM Why would you keep them? okihost 07-24-2002, 08:29 PM I would say I have about 3 at home not including the other 10 or so I threw out over the month.. The latest trick they have came up with it a nifty metal tin case that is perfect for smokes or any other smokable(sp?) substance you might need it for especally if you are hiking or something and dont want them to get crushed. The funniest part is we are a 3 person company and about 3 weeks ago they sent us 12 CD's???? I remember seeing some site somewhere that they had a huge pile of AOL cd's that everyone sent in and they were going to see how big they could get it.. I will look for the url... fractiousws 07-24-2002, 10:51 PM I never got those cases with mine. sonichost 07-24-2002, 11:40 PM I have one. And I hang on to that bad boy, you never know when you'll be stuck in a Hotel and your normal pre-paid ISP craps out on you. [STORY] I use SlingShot when I travel and their whole network went down. :bawling: It was a Sunday afternoon so Office-Max and Staples were both closed so purchasing pre-paid from another company wasn't easy as I wasn't used to the town and had no idea where anything was except Staples, Office-Max and Wal-Mart (all next to each other). It wasn't logical for me to dial my local ISP @ like 25 per minute for 5+ hours per day. So remembering the days of when I used to always get those damn AOL cds in the mail I aimlessly go off in search of one. So I now keep a un-used one with me when I travel, never know when you might need one. :) - Matt esdjco 07-24-2002, 11:42 PM They make good frisbees! WiseOnline 07-24-2002, 11:45 PM AOL is the new Postmail spammer ;X - Please no class action lawsuits please. viGeek 07-25-2002, 12:16 AM I have so many of those AOL cd's laying its rediculous. Its even worse that I used to have AOL back in like 1994. So they have been sending them since the 3.0 Days. I have every version of aol 3.0, 3.0 32 bit, 4.0 16 bit, 4.0 32 bit, 5.0, 6.0 7.0. And also have most of them in the 'Gold' & 'Platinum' editions. I will never use aol again, unless they pay me to use it. WiseOnline 07-25-2002, 12:22 AM I think I'll sell mine on ebay, anyone want to join? - Hehe. akashik 07-25-2002, 06:42 AM Well there's a few uses for them: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=aol+cd+uses Greg Moore code_renegade 07-25-2002, 11:01 AM Since we've got no use for them in Singapore, we take them out into the backyard and enjoy a game of frisbee :D At that point in time when AOL was going crazy with the giveaway, practically all our computer magazines had them. My dad would drop them into the trash, but we little ones will take them out and let loose ;) Rochen 07-25-2002, 11:12 AM I have 3, I normally throw them straight in the trash. I also have 4 from AOL's sister provider, CompuServe :D First they had "AOL Gold Edition" then "AOL Platinum Edition" and the latest one I have is "AOL Titanium Edition". What will be next? :stickout They also have big piles off AOL CD's in Asda here in the UK, Asda is owned by Wal-Mart for you US Folk :) jhcashman 07-25-2002, 02:51 PM I have filled 4 100 cd cakes and a 5th that almost full....of AOL compuserve....ect ect cds!! Goto a large parking lot light and take cover... Now you can prove that AOL is dangerous to it's users :D... I'll see if I can get the flying spinning AOL coaster on death of video for all to see... :D... Global-Host2 07-28-2002, 08:47 PM Someone should invent a cd gun.
