How many customers can be hosted on a quadcore dual xeon 2.0 Ghz 4 gb ram dedicated server with 100 MBPS uplink. If 50% sites are static and rest are dynamic? How much can the server handle and how much can i oversell.
Thanks and regards

Static sites if they are not heavy (in traffics per month i mean to say) its recommendable around 300-400 and dynamic sites depends upon wht will be the traffics to your sites. This is wht i am saying as per std deviations..If you have 50% Dynamic sites , ur ratio for static sites should be as well low than said above for better performance of the server.

will this server just be a web server, or also have mail, databases and the CP?

@Yash-JH : Yes it will be all of those.

@liasion : Is it recommended for having 8GB RAM 1 TB HDD and more bandwidth ? also if there is less of dynamic sites and more of static sites with low bandwidth usage (Around 500MB ~ 1.5GB) ? Could i host more sites ??

This is an impossible question to answer.

There are just too many different variables that must be factored into the answer...

For example, you could have *one* customer who has a very active discussion forum, and he could take down the whole server.

Or you could have one customer who has one big script that runs by cron every few minutes, and he could take down the server.

Or you could have one customer who uploads some very popular file, and thousands of people begin to download it at the same time...

Or.. you could put 1000 simple HTML websites on the server with no problem.

The question is not possible to be answered, without knowing more about the type of customers that will be on the server.

I agree with mrzippy, you could have one website that could take up all of the server, in fact need more, e.g. google needs tons of servers, where as you could host 10,000 websites on one server if people never vist them.

It's really not a clear cut answer to this question. My suggestion would be monitor the server load and memory usage as you add more customers.

Once you get to your chose maximum load and memory usage, move to a new server.

This is a tiral and error type approach but much more tangible since both load and memeory usage are numbers you can work with.

Yeah.. I agree with TheTop...
Actually you should know wht type of clients u will be having on that server.
See first u were saying there will be 50% static and rest dynamic.
Now ur saying less dynamic and more static.
Kindly decide wht will be the-type-of websites u will put.

In my opinion

You could host like 2000-3000 simple HTML sites, with 1mb to 2mb/space used and a max 450mb/month/bandwith each.
Maximum space usage before downlowading mails 30mb each.

Any website bigger in any subject just decrease the amount.
