Report: Co. Makes Offer for Williams

Level 3 Reportedly Makes $1.1 Billion Bid for Williams Communications Group
NEW YORK (AP) -- Level 3 Communications Inc. has reportedly made a $1.1 billion bid to acquire Williams Communications Group.

In a report post on its Web site early Wednesday, The Wall Street Journal said the bid came at the same time that Tulsa, Okla.-based Williams is finalizing a deal with investor Leucadia National Corp. to invest $150 million. The move would let Williams emerge from bankruptcy proceedings as a stand-alone company, the newspaper reported, citing unidentified sources.

The Journal said it wasn't known when Broomfield, Colo.-based Level 3 made its offer, but said it could complicate Williams' efforts to gain bankruptcy court approval for the Leucadia deal.

Calls made by The Associated Press to Wiliams Communications and Level 3 weren't immediately returned.
