Hey everyone, I need some help.

I had a blog and a domain name registered with mher.org, which shut down 2 months ago. I now want to start my blog again under a new host but with the same domain name.

Here's where the problem comes in. I read that you need to contact your Domain Name Registrar in order to transfer your domain name over to the new host. I have no clue what my domain name registrar is and how to contact them. Mher.org is already gone so I can't contact them for help. Does any one know how I can get back my domain name and be able to transfer it over to a new host? I still own the domain name since I renewed it in March...only to have Mher.org shut down 2 months later...

Hi,

I know if the domain is a UK domain e.g. (.co.uk or .org.uk ) then you should contact nominet.org.uk

When you renewed in March, whom did you pay? eNom or your hosting company? You'll probably need to contact your old hosting company to find out how to change the nameservers to your new host's nameservers. Unless you registered the domain name through a different company, in which case, contact them.

I think I registered it through Mher.org since I don't recall seeing anything else involved. I'm not sure how to contact them now that they shut down.

You'll need to tell us the domain name at this point if we are to be able to help you any further.

I just went through this with a client. Transferring the domain name to a new registrar can be a pain when the reseller is out of business.

Hi,

You can use nominet.org.uk or whois.net to check where your domain is registered

Please check from whois records first that domain is registered under your contacts or the hosting company.

I am having the same problem at the moment and am trying to transfer one of my domains to a new host.

The domain is vaishnavacalendar.com and is regsitered at uk-cheapest.co.uk

I want to move it and everything at uk-cheapest is automated, they do not respond to any support tickets at all, no phone number, nohing.

So using the automated process I unlocked the domain, which cost £10 and I got an auto email saying that the domain is unlocked and that my new host needs to now initiate the transfer.

However the host I am moving to says that they cannot iniiate the transfer without an EPP code, but uk-cheapest did not send me the epp code and like I say they are totally uncontactable, so I dont know how to proceed.

Does anyone know how I can get this code if the current registrant wont tell me and if there is anyway I can get this transferred. I did see in the whois that the whois server is resellone.net, but again they are not contactable.

Any ideas or do I have to accept my domains have to stay where they are?

With my client's registrar, it was called Secret Code.

Look around on the control panel for anything that looks like it could be that. Paying money to unlock a domain is ridiculous. It should be free and fortunately was free for my client.

Good luck.

mher.org, which shut down 2 months agoWhy doesn't that surprise me...

Anyway, do a whois: http://whois.domaintools.com/ and look for the registrar. If you have trouble determining who the registrar is, share the domain here. Someone should be able to help you.

Good luck!

I'm afraid if the Administrative Contact lists your host as the owner, then you're pretty much out of luck.

If so, then your only way of recourse is proof that the domain is your idea and pursue it via copyright.

Anyway, do a whois: http://whois.domaintools.com/ and look for the registrar.

To be specific from what Dan just posted, look at the WHOIS search results of that domain name and note the line "registrar". That is who to contact.

Thanks for the site everyone. It says "The Planet Internet Services Inc." So I guess they're the people to call. Thanks again!

If that's what it says in the "ICANN Registrar" field, then that's who you should contact.

Keep in mind that the right attitude can help you get more of the help you need. You might be frustrated, but it's not their fault. ;)

Good luck!

I dont know whether it will get me anywhere, but as neither the reseller , nor the resellers registrar reply to any mail, even though I have been uber polite and patient for weeks now. I am goin to get legal aid and ask a domain specialist lawyer to see what he can do.

This is a big problem for me, because 2 of the 11 domains registered with uk-cheapest are business sites with good SE rankings and to lose them, and have to get another domain name, I think would cause a problem with my SE rankings, hence traffic, hence, my income.

So I am going to see what a lawyer can do, I am not one who usually resorts to such stuff, but as I have tried everything, I think its no more Miss Nice guy/gal.
If nothing else it will be interesting to find out the legalities and whether I can do anything about it.

I wish you luck with that.

It is extremely frustrating experience which fortunately worked out for my client.

I learned my lesson, and I am now only going with a registrar and not a reseller.

You could also contact ICANN I guess and ask them for help/guidance.

I'm moving this thread to the Domain Name forum.

Thanks for that advice. I have been to the ICANN website and have written to them in the hope that they may be able to do something about transferring the domains , bypassing the registrar and reseller.

They also have details there on how to complain about just this kind of problem, so I have followed their advice on that also by registering a compalint with icpen.org/ and have written direct to Icann to see if they can bypass the registrar to do something with my domains.

I also did a bit of reserach into the directorship of the reseller company and managed AT LAST to find some names and addresses involved. The registered company address is just some shared london address, but the company directors actually dont live too far from me here in the UK and alhough all their numbers are ex directory, I googled them and got an email address for one of them who appears to be a keen jogger running a jogging club in Suffolk. So I have written a begging letter to the Captain of the Sudbury Joggers Association (also director of uk-cheapest) asking what has happened to their support system and if he can help me.

I won't hold my breath, but at least it made me laugh when I tracked down the people involved and found they were all out on Fun Runs.
