Today I received HATE email, to my freeplace.net, saying we will 'get you' again, calling me a spammer etc. So me being the anti-spam activist I am wondered, I never spammed, nor put my URL anywhere on the web except search engines, and on a couple forums when people are looking for something I have on my site. So I start looking at google, I knew that when I got the domain, it was a site a couple months before I picked up the domain, as their were about 30 incoming links on google. So I ventured into google groups, searched for freeplace.net, and turns out, the people who used to have the domain, spammed, and got their site terminated. I dont want people to think that It was I who was spamming, nor want to be associated with the sites history of spam abuse. What do you guys suggest I do?

I suggest that you explain that story in your website. Something like: ' have you recieved spam from us? '

you've had that domain for a while now haven't you? Seems a little late to check their mail for spam :) It does happen though. I've owned avemedia.com for over a year now and still get the odd e-mail from people to addresses that the old owner must have used (some from family of all people).

As the internet grows older I suppose we'll all have to become more aware of the skeletons in the closets of the domains we pick up.

I think this is an excellent idea. Make sure you point out your anti-spam activities, and stuff. :)

also - make sure your site/server does not have unupdated form-mail-scripts and other scripts that spammers can use without your knowledge.

Thanks for the advice guys. I will put something on the site that such as 'The New FreePlace.Net". I did find out, through talking to the guy that emailed me telling me I should die, that it has been a while since he has been spammed, he was bored, and felt like harassing me, geez, arent I popular :cool:
