I can't remember if someone asked this question earlier or not.

Basically in a few weeks, a domain I'm interested in will be expiring. Now it's currently with godaddy. So I'm wondering, what's the best service to use to backorder it? would it be tdnam? or bluerazor? Since their run or owned by godaddy network?

Expiry at GoDaddy goes something like this...

Expire
Redemption Period (12-17 days)
TDNAM auction
Delete (45 days after expiry)

It's not clear exactly when the TDNAM auction starts but it lasts for about 10 days. So your best bet is a GoDaddy backorder which is then placed as the first bid on the TDNAM auction. If you want stealth mode, then just wait for it to appear in the TDNAM auction and make your bid 1 minute before the auction expires. Some people have said that if you backorder it at BlueRazor, then it doesn't go to auction at all. So you might try that option. But I've had an opinion from GoDaddy that they all go to TDNAM.

how about if I were to backorder it.. say 1-2 days before it's ended at tdnam?

also, if I backorder it now and someone bids higher than the back order price.. do I lose out? Kinda makes the whole back order process weak...

GoDaddy backordering is pretty hopeless at securing names.

There is no point in backordering it when it at TDNAM. Just bid at the auction in the last minute. It's an auction. If somebody outbids you, you have to outbid them to get the domain.

true, but they have some stupid fee just to bid or sell domains..

C'mon $4.95/yr isn't going to break your bank.

it could if I spend that amount.. and someone just outbids me like crazy... I'd have spent $5 for nothing.. which I could have used elsewhere..

EDIT: just noticed, if you backorder.. they actually include the tdnam fee in there.. so the 4.99 or what ever the price was is already included in the backorder fee.

My only question is.. say I don't back order on expiry date.. and it goes into auction.. and it's say 1-2 days before the auction ends.. and it has 1 bid.. of say $10. Now if I backorder it.. then.. will I still get it? Were assuming no one bids higher than the backorder price.

I think the backorder price is $18.95. that is split between $8.95 renewal fee and $10 initial bid. Since you cannot bit $10 because it already bid, then the winning bidder will get it.

I don't think you can "game" the system in this way. I think once it's in auction then you backorder would only be activated if nobody bids on the domain and the domain drops. In fact I would think that might be the case even after the domain expires (but I'm guessing).

It's good to know that a backorder includes a 1 year subscription to TDNAM. It must be some kind of promo offer. That would be your best way to go since you get a free 1 year subscription, but you lose the element of stealth since there will be your initial bid sitting there for all to see.

then again.. technically... you can see if anyone has bid.. near the end days of the auction. And if someone has, then you can technically backorder it, however it might say you someone has bid on it, so do you wish to bid higher and you could and win the domain.. so that's the best way to avoid the stealth area I guess..

You are at risk of losing the domain if you backorder it whilst on auction. There may be someone else waiting to grab the domain in the last few seconds of the auction. Then you're stuck with a backorder which is useless other than for backordering another domain, again and again, until you're successful.

so what's the point then? either way your at risk. Either you backorder and someone bids higher than $10 and you lose.. or you backorder at the end and they bid and you lose... no real point, unless your willing to counter offer I suppose.

GoDaddy backordering is pretty hopeless at securing names.

Your best bet is to snipe the domain in the last few seconds of the auction.

hmm this is odd.. 10 hours left and I placed a backorder for the domain name now.. but it doesn't show any opening bid or any bid at all??? I also set in the panel of backordering the domain name... still it shows no bids?

do i have to go ot tdnam and bid on it?? I thought the backorder system does it's self?

Well until the domain drops, your backorder is useless. So you'll have to wait until the domain drops. From experience, this is somewhere about 3 weeks after the auction ends. Give or take a week.

As I said before. I don't think you can "game" the system in the way you are trying to do. Probably because it's already at auction, the backorder is held until the domain drops. Backorder it BEFORE it goes to auction. Now you are at risk of not getting the domain unless you use your free TDNAM subscription to bid on the domain if it gets other bidders. If there are no bidders your backorder will normally succeed. Although there have been the rare instances when GoDaddy have not successfully captured their own registered domains (I know, ludicrous as it seems). But in the majority of cases they will get them.
