Why do some webhosts have banner exchange/ ad network/ affiliate ads on their sites? That is the most moronic thing I can think of. I wont mention any of this sort, but I've seen plenty posting on this forum.

Hiccups 07-23-2002, 10:50 PM I have landed on some that have multiple pop-ups. Goldfiles 07-23-2002, 10:54 PM :uzi: popups deathlord 07-23-2002, 11:12 PM I agree when i goto look for a hosting site and windup with Ads banners and or popups it is a bit of a turn away. AtlantaWebhost.com 07-23-2002, 11:21 PM I have not spent a whole lot of time browsing other web hosters websites. I am assuming that the ads you are referring to are not just cross-selling links. For example, I have quite a few links/ad-type-boxes that point to other services/websites/products maintained by Rietta Solutions. Gem Hexen 07-23-2002, 11:26 PM I mean banner ads from third party networks/bannerexchanges/etc Oh neat, you made whois web. I have that on my other computer. NovaW 07-23-2002, 11:31 PM That is the most moronic thing I can think of Yep - it takes a lot of stupidity to top putting banner ads on a site "designed" to sell web hosting AtlantaWebhost.com 07-23-2002, 11:36 PM Yea, Whois Web is my program. According to my Apache logs, the setup file has been downloaded 343 times since Sunday and Whois Web has been opened by users 677 times since Sunday. I can tell how many people open the program because it downloads a text file from my website that contains the version number of the latest edition. Now, if more people would actually buy a registered copy of the program I would be quite happy :) reseller 07-23-2002, 11:37 PM bad idea. even worse are the pop ups that end up ina repeditive cycle - you know, close one pop up and it opens another etc. nuthin 07-24-2002, 01:34 AM I havent seen too many host's with pop ups, Banner's are OK in my opinion if they FIT in with the layout of a web-site and in some-way is related to a webhosting business. EG: A web-host could provide a banner of a webdesign, internet service provider company or something on their site. As long as it's not like fully you know off subject eg; selling womens clothes or something stupid via a banner ad. Another reason you might see pop up's is because you are infected with scumware, eg; gator and the likes and their actually is no pop up's or anything on their site. Popunder's/Exit ad's are ok.. compared to popup's, I actually don't mind popunders/exit ad's.. as long as you don't get bombarded with them when leaving a site. VoxKeysGtr 07-24-2002, 01:54 AM I do not do business with company's whose web sites are polluted with ads. Pop-ups, especially, are annoying, but those flashing ads are rather irksome, as well. To me, a company who puts up a lot of ads on their web site appears to be amatureish and desperate to make a buck. Definitely not someone I want to do business with. chrisb 07-24-2002, 02:25 AM I agree. They look unprofessional; but moreso I think it makes the site & owner just look cheap. akashik 07-24-2002, 03:29 AM The presumption of being a webhost is that you provide a service within a contained environment. You do one thing, and do it well with no reliance on outside influences. You may in turn offer other services, or even promote 3rd party services through your support, or information pages. Whether this is a reality or not, that's what the focus of the site should be. To that end, yes banner ads are pretty silly. Considering I doubt they add very much in the way of real traffic, versus the fact that putting them up will drive off customers it seems an odd thing to do. Maybe it shows the experience of the people running these businesses as anyone's who been around a while knows this as gospel. If you've just discovered the internet banner ads probably still look like a nice way to make free money :) Greg Moore ntwaddel 07-24-2002, 03:30 AM im trying to get cyberwings banners on my site :D |
