View Full Version : Changing registrar (domain transfer), what about nameservers?

Hello again :)

I have a domain example.com at registrar A, with nameservers ns1.example.com, ns2.example.com. Now I want to transfer this domain to another registrar B.

Now ns1.example.com, ns2..etc. hostnames/nameservers are also registered at A. What will happen to them? :(

Anyone changed the registrar with their hostnames registered? What happened? ( I don't want all the nameservers to stop responding  )

I may take risk, but anyone with experience? :D

Domain transfers from one registrar to another will not affect your nameservers.

Nameserver names are stored in the Registry, not at your registrar.

Moving your domain from one hosting company to another will though.

I don't understand which you are doing here - one or the other or perhaps both?

I'm changing domain registrar only.

I also believe that nameservers are stored in NSI Registery, but when you do a whois ns1.example.com the name of the Registrar A appears.

That's where I'm confused, if the Registrar A will drop it (ns1.. etc.) or will it remain as it is in the Registry? Or these records will be moved to new Registrar as well?

The nameservers are stored at the registry. Use the whois at internic.net and you'll see what the registry knows about your domain. It only knows who your registrar is and what your nameservers are called. These records don't actually move with your domain information to the new registrar, they stay at the registry the whole time.
