Hello Everyone :)
This seems to be daunting task, but I have been asked to do that remotely via ssh. Before I go and do it, is it really plausible to do it? Or should I just ask for a fresh OS install from CD?
Any feedback from someone who has "been there and done it"??
Thank You!

I haven't upgraded versions before, but I have applied all the security fixes to a release and rebuilt and installed world and kernel remotely. Here's a link you might find useful http://profile.sh/syswiki/index.php?Upgrading%20FreeBSD%20to%20the%20latest%20-STABLE%20code

Yes, it's easy.
But you'll spend some time configuring sendmail (smmsp) in 4.6
Well, I have also applied all security patches and built the kernel remotely (except the installworld). Its fun indeed :) but havn't jumped from one release to another.
Thanks for the link, I'll surely read it as well. Apparently looks like a summarized version from the Handbook ;) hopefully may have more tips!

I don't use sendmail :D qmail with all the patches :)
So it means quite easy. Hmm... I'm waiting now for my friend to open the firewall to actually download anything on the server :bawling:

/stand/sysinstall.
I think it does everything for you.

cvsup the latest stable sources.
then:
#cd /usr/src/
#mergemaster -p
Merge the files
#make world
#make install world
That's all

Yes, simpler than Linux. :)
You can cvsup to 4.6.1 (solves some serious bugs)
P.S: Don't forget to install a new kernel.
Simpler than Windows :o Bingo! Done it! :D That was coooooool  Within 2 hours ;)

FreeBSD rocks!
no doubt about it.
in my opinion Windows is like pop music .. easy to start, quite enjoyable sometimes.. plain noise at times!
linux is like classical music - goes far yet leaves some bits desired..
FreeBSD is pure Mozart or the choicest red wine - if you develop a taste for it, hard to settle for anything less!
as always this is just a fool's rambling... :)
