View Full Version : WHTwiki is waiting for you
writespeak 07-24-2007, 06:43 PM Look at the top navigation for WHT, and you'll see a new link: Web Hosting Wiki (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/wiki/). Once you're there, we invite you to browse, add to existing pages, or start new pages.
Some pages to get you started:
About (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/wiki/WHTwiki:About)
Help (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/wiki/WHTwiki:Help)
Participate (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/wiki/WHTwiki:Participate)
Navigation (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/wiki/Help:Navigation)
Policies (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/wiki/WHTwiki:Policies)
Some benefits of WHTwiki:
Content is the result of collaboration and can be updated at any time.
As a WHT member, you can fix some problems yourself instead of reporting them to the moderation team (although reporting them is still an option).
Since WHTwiki is new, everything you add to it will get noticed.
For more information, see the iNET press release Web Hosting Talk Launches The Web Hosting Wiki (http://inetinteractive.com/about/pressreleases/07-24-2007.html).
Questions? Comments? Post them here. :)

Martie 07-25-2007, 09:58 AM Comments: Looks pretty cool
Now to find some time! I did peek last night at it though...oh me, another *toy* :D
CD Burnt 07-25-2007, 03:39 PM I think it needs a search box in a prominent position.
Orien 07-26-2007, 02:44 AM Looks pretty neat. I might contribute some information in my spare time.
avythe 07-26-2007, 04:58 AM What's the policy on copying text from Wikipedia? Much of the information on the "dedicated server" page is wrong and the bulk of it doesn't make sense. The Wikipedia article provides an accurate description and I don't see a need to paraphrase it, provided that copying is acceptable.
I would contribute on what i can, by the way the forum itself is a big WIKI
avythe 07-26-2007, 05:17 AM After reading through much of the existing content, I hereby move to have the wiki temporarily disabled. It is very much in need of some serious copy-editing and could benefit from a complete literary overhaul.
I realize that the point of a wiki is to be edited and to evolve, but this is really an evolutionary dead end. Let's have some native English speakers rewrite this so it makes sense before we display it for the general public.
Please note that I'm not bashing the wiki itself - in fact, it looks very nice. The content however, is seriously making me consider stabbing myself.
Mxhub 07-26-2007, 07:38 AM Nice addon for WHT. Going be useful for newbie shopping for hosting on the net.
SoftWareRevue 07-26-2007, 08:43 AM ... the point of a wiki is to be edited and to evolve ...
Exactly. If you see something that needs editing, edit it. :wht:
avythe 07-26-2007, 02:40 PM Exactly. If you see something that needs editing, edit it.
The problem is that it's not "something" that needs to be edited - it's more like "everything." Did someone write up articles in Chinese and then use freetranslation.com to post them in English?
Uptime is nothing but paper tiger promises.
Woooo 07-26-2007, 08:28 PM OKOK keep adding more pages to show us more ads.

So rather than hurling insults - go do something about it. It's a community project - feel free to go in and revert everything to proper English. ;)

avythe 07-26-2007, 09:50 PM So rather than hurling insults
I'm not hurling insults; I'm suggesting that it be temporarily deactivated while some people populate it with some basic factual information. It's not so much that it's written terribly but that there's information that's just plain wrong. It would take a week for me just to correct what's there now and it doesn't seem like anyone else is interested in correcting the existing content.

I took another quick look at the pages and I have to agree that some of the language in there is really awkward and some information is also false. I made a few minor changes to a few pages and will continue to do so in my spare time.
sailor 07-26-2007, 11:41 PM ok I edited quite a few and added some.
avythe 07-27-2007, 02:29 AM ok I edited quite a few and added some.
ditto.
edited a lot, added a lot. some pages still need a severe overhaul - documented those.
question: is there a way to show disambiguation with terms? i tried the wikipedia format, but it didn't work.
writespeak 07-27-2007, 03:05 PM Thanks for all the feedback. It's all useful. :)
I think it needs a search box in a prominent position.
We have the search box in the same place as in the forum, but we'll be adding a search help link (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/wiki/WHTwiki:Searching) to the navigation.
What's the policy on copying text from Wikipedia?
We would prefer to have unique content for WHT. Collectively, our members are very knowledgeable about anything to do with web hosting, so collectively, we can create valuable content. :)
I would contribute on what i can, by the way the forum itself is a big WIKI
Thanks. :) Concerning the second part of that, forums and wikis are different beasts. Forums are for discussion, where each post is the contribution of one member. We certainly aren't replacing our forum. Wikis, OTOH, are more suited for collaborating on content.
Look at the tutorials we have in our tutorials sections. In many of those threads, typical comments are "Great tutorial. But I would add..." Or "Good tutorial, but I disagree about...." Put that type of content in a wiki, and collectively, we can create pages that are more informative than any of us could create on our own.

We could have delayed the launch for several months while we compiled more and better information about web hosting. But it still wouldn't have been as good as it can be with all of us participating (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/wiki/WHTwiki:Participate). We've created the framework, and now it's ready for collaboration. Each of us can bring different skills and knowledge to this project. :look:
The wiki is a work in progress and always will be. That's WikiNature (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/wiki/WHTwiki:Wiki_terminology#W).
question: is there a way to show disambiguation with terms? i tried the wikipedia format, but it didn't work.
We'll get that added in a day or 2.
Again, thanks for all the feedback and wiki participation. :spiny:

RossMAN 09-26-2007, 03:40 AM I love the WHTWiki and wish it had more exposure.
