Right now I have an Athlon 700MHz overclocked to 950, when I get paid the $700 I'm owed and pay off my speeding ticket, I'm getting an Athlon XP 1900 (1.6GHz), which I'll also overclock as high as possible.

I built mine about a year ago (so it's not so hot). However since I no longer game it serves me well.

AMD Thunderbird 1.2Ghz
896MB RAM (PC 133)
2 x Maxtor 80GB 5400RPM
64MB Geforce 3 Ti 200
12x10x24 CD RW

The only thing I regret now is the 5400RPM Drives and the PC 133 RAM.

But hey, it's paid for and gets the job done. :D

I certainly doubt mine is the fastest.

I use laptops exclusively for personal computers (servers excluded), my current one is a Toshiba.

Pentium III-M (mobile) 1.1ghz
256mb ram
20gb HDD
14.1" LCD screen
16MB graphics (reasonable for laptops)
Hooked into surround sound HiFi system for sound (fun when playing games.. you can hear people coming up behind you literally :D).

I've got about 6gb left on the laptop HDD. My home directory on the fileserver is about 8gb (I'll be putting another HDD in it soon, taking it to 4 HDDs).

Mine is just a simple workhorse.

1ghz thunderbird
1.0 gig of ram
1 x 80 gig western digital 7200 rpm
1 x 30 gig maxtor 7200 rpm
32 megs graphics
15 inch lcd display

I thought it was time to upgrade so I just put in an order for ***three*** of these:

AMD 1800+
40 gig maxtor 7200
64 megs graphics
512 DDR PC2100 Ram

Studio64

I have about 80 gigs of porn free used storage space...

What you say? 80 gigs? How?...

Well... When I purchase an application, I usually copy the entire copy of the CD to my HD. Why?.... Faster install, easy to add or remove the extra components that come w/ it instead of hunting around for the CD itself.

Also, having the 2000 CD makes reinstalling components and peices alot easier.

Also 25 gigs of MP3's cuts into my 100gig total in a big way.

Your computer is no where near the fastest with only 256 megs of ddr ram and only 10 and 13 gig ide drives. Look at Brendan's beast!

How can yours with ide drives be faster then Brendan's scsi drives and four times as much ram? Not to mentions the dual server-class processors.

True, perhaps instead of quoting specs, we should quote something like a sisoft benchmark...

Having a DUAL processor machine is useless, unless your going to use its capabilities to the full....

If Avatar had 1gb ram, his machine would be a lot faster than Brendans machine.. when playing games... as games only use 1 processor (apart from some).....

Even I had the option for a Dual MP but whats the point, when your not going to use that kinda power to its fullest potential....

There are IDE hdds out there that are FASTER than SCSI, look at the ones I have for instance (8MB Cache) ... they are faster than most SCSI's in the market at the moment, and then having that config in RAID "0" (totaling 240GB) on seperate IDE channels give me double the speed and power, ripping any SCSI hdd off the market ;)

Just bragging ;)

mdrussell
07-30-2002, 12:19 PM
Anyone want to post their PCMark2002 benchmarks?

cabalstudios
07-30-2002, 12:23 PM
I'll post when I get the stats.......

RobTheGolfer
07-30-2002, 12:27 PM
No, Brendens whould still whoop ass on account he has scsi hard drive and serv-class processors which have quite a bit more cache then the p4. Brenden's would still beat Avator's.

Second, the cache of the hard drive only makes it faster when doing largers file read and writes without stopping in beaten. Because scsi hard drives have alot faster seek time they are almost always faster except in that case.

RobTheGolfer
07-30-2002, 12:29 PM
Third, Most scsi drives have more then an 8meg cache. I have seen some with a 32 meg cache! :D

mdrussell
07-30-2002, 12:31 PM
4th - SCSI drives are at 10k or 15k as opposed to 7.2k (RPM that is). Although the WD's with 8MB of cache are very fast for an IDE drive.

RobTheGolfer
07-30-2002, 12:35 PM
Fast drives = shorter seek times. :stickout

cabalstudios
07-30-2002, 12:41 PM
You guys need to get your specs right... i'll challenge any SCSI system up against the IDE drives I have, guranteed i'll woop its ass... Bring IT ON

Go check some hardware sites out.. see the results for ya self... :stickout

cabalstudios
07-30-2002, 12:44 PM
Here you go http://www6.tomshardware.com/storage/02q1/020305/index.html :stickout

RobTheGolfer
07-30-2002, 01:01 PM
I see. And seek time is 8.9 milseconds. Thats horribles compared to a 10k rpm 4.3 miliseconds if I am not mistaken.

cabalstudios
07-30-2002, 01:08 PM
But remember my setup its RAID "0" on seperate ide channels, which means double the cache and double the speed.... :stickout

If you are willing to spend big $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ on high end SCSI with 32MB cache for a computer used in the office/gaming that's insane....

Summary:
Thanks to a huge buffer memory (8 MB instead of the typical 2 MB), the WD1200JB performs similarly to high-performance SCSI drives, thereby leaving its rivals in the dust. Though the access time and the CPU utilization are still a ways away from SCSI levels, this drive offers superior performance and tremendous capacity at attractive prices.
