Hi

I got a situation where I cant add DNS records to my domain name - they're already mapped to the registrar's websites and locked. [dns1.my-registrar.com, dns2.my-registrar.com, ...]

I can add A, MX, CNAME, NS, TXT records and SOA Parameters - to obtain this service, DNS records had to be mapped to the registrar's website.

Now what do I have to add to map my domain to my host's name-server ?
I need to map my-domain.com to ns1.my-host.com and ns2.my-host.com.

Adding A records need IP address.

Thanks

Unlock the domain in your control panel. This might make the 'change nameservers' option appear.
WHT'ers can give better advice/help if you can tell us which registrar you are using.

Cant unlock - it is necessary for the DNS to be mapped to the registrar's IP to obtain Managed DNS Service (http://manage.answerable.com/kb/servlet/KBServlet/cat124.html).

Using Answerable (http://answerable.com) - formerly Website.in and DirectI (for retail too).

According to help (http://manage.answerable.com/kb/servlet/KBServlet/faq580.html):
For your Managed DNS service to work, it is essential that all queries for your domain name should reach our Name servers, which would respond to the query with the records that you have specified.

Thus, it is vital that after you have bought the Service for a particular Domain Name, you need to change the Name Servers for this Domain Name to our Name Servers.

For the domain, I've added CNAME record to map it to ghs.google.com. for Blogger Domains (http://help.blogger.com/bin/answer.py?answer=55373) and CNAME & MX records for Google Apps (http://google.com/a).

But now I want my-domain.com to point to a shared-host that I have to host a website at http://my-domain.com. For this I got to map DNS records to NS1.my-host.com and NS2.my-host.com

The two things you want to do conflict with each other. You can't use your host's DNS and your registrar's DNS at the same time.

Pick one of the two and setup all of your host records there.

gerolsteiner - agreed. But I got to use my registrar's DNS - no way out on this one.

So, now how do I get my website hosted at any of these common shared-hosts ?

I can add a child-name-server, add ns.my-domain.com to hosts' IP and add an additional DNS Name Server to point to ns.my-domain.com.
Or add A record directly to map to hosts' IP ?

Exactly - just use your registrar's dns to map (or point) to your hosting account via IP or CNAME

How do I get to add A record pointing to host's IP ? The host should accept incoming A records shouldnt it ?

Hey, its pretty important for me. Could you please tell me how you solved your problem?

I'm stuck in the same position.

Sorry for bumping the old topic. I couldn't find help anywhere else. Not even on google! :o

Assuming you're using DirectI's service, just add another A record.
Leave the textbox for Host Name blank and enter the IP of the server in Destination IP Address box.

I did. I mean, I added A records to both the IPs of the host's nameservers. Now, my domain points to the mainpage of the host, but I'm unable to add it to the cPanel. :-(
