View Full Version : RackShack deadly slow

I hate to rant in a public forum but this is starting to worry and/or upset me. The speeds at Rackshack over the past week now have been frightening -- pings are at 500ms or more, sometimes their forum and main site are too slow to use or inaccessible, and it's been impossible to use my machines with more than 20% packet loss.

I've given it a week without saying anything because I've attributed it to a) the fibre cut and b) the installation of the new line. It's scary, though, that it is still going on.

It has been confirmed by other people but there haven't been enough to say it's a full blown problem. Maybe they are having routing issues to different parts of the country.

In any case, my post here is in no way a trash or flame... I simply hope to elicit a response from those who have also been seeing this issue so I can determine if the problem is in the routing or if it is a genuine network issue. RackShack has been very tight-lipped about it, and it's a little frightening.

Its been happening a lot lately (past 2 weeks)

same troubles from europe, but i hope that they will resolve the issues. (first bigger one, i had with them), because customers cant reach server ( and that doesnt make them happy) :bawling:

I've seen the same thing. I've been documenting the problems in two open trouble tickets.

It seems to be isolated to the cogent link, at least for me. (surprise, surpise)

What I want to know is why suddenly most routes outbound on my box are going through Cogent when they were going through verio or time warner, and why traffic wasn't routed around Cogent's daily crappyness to another provider.

I just had a 46s ping (average over 10 pings) yesterday, every thing seems fine where I'm connecting from. Traceroutes show I'm connecting though Williams. Not too shabby :p.

I hope they have this problem fixed soon. It was ok for a while until about 30 minutes ago or so.

I am having the same problem, and i am starting to get annoyed. Ftp, ssh, mail, everything is struggling. Its been slowing down for the last 4 or 5 days and then today it just seems like its about to die.

I thought it was only me in Australia. Its been really bad here.

Well i live in Canada its really slow. It has always been fast, but now it is just annoying because they haven't even posted a network problem.

I just saw a post by TechieSurfer over on the RS forums that said there was a 500 megabit attack against a customer today. That would explain why for a while there a lot of their network was virtually inaccessible, the reason for which I posted this thread. It seems to have cleared. But -- by god -- wouldn't it have been nice to hear about this while it's happening on some status page so I wouldn't have had to come here and post.

In any case, the network has been of relatively poor quality lately, this attack notwithstanding, I hope it is cleared up when the second Verio gig comes online.

This is not cogent issue but peering between cogent (psinet) and UUNET.

UUNET as other major backbone : SPRINT / C&W and some few other prefer sold peering (or transit) instead of upgrade peering with current partner.

I have many case about this in europe and know few story in USA.

Tier1 peering is fight ;) Middle carrier or Top 5-15 Carrier have to fight to upgrade peering with the top 5.

That's all :)

Cogent is Above.net customer. I have very good response time to cogent network because they buy transit to Above.net (i have transit in france to above.net at 200 Mbps + Peering with them at 100 Mbps). Cogent still very stable in this case.

I don't know well their network but the traceroute show only a peering problem.

You can said the same thing for the other side : WorldCom UUNET have a very slow backbone ;)

You can said this : WorldCom UUNET have a very slow backbone I don't think I've ever heard UUNet described this way before.

Hehehe that's normal they have much more route than cogent how haven't full internet route in peer.

Anyway check serveurdedie.com on "rapports" you will see that's AS702 have couple peering saturation between now and past year.

When i said "You can said this : WorldCom UUNET have a very slow backbone" i don't think you understood me :)

UUNET have good backbone, but with lower peering they don't are very reactiv and maybe don't want ;)

Also when you manage a big backbone it's much more difficult than manage several BGP4 routers and as all big company it's take time most times for upgrade issue.

I guess UUNET don't use IS-IS protocol also.

Oh, I didn't mean to question what you said, I'm just not qualified to do that. I've just never heard UUNet described that way before. :) And you are right, I probably did misunderstand you, and still do. Networking at that level just isn't my cup of tea. Heck, I just learned what HSRP meant a couple months ago!

Try running 2 hosts (php50.com and xug.net) and have your thousands of users abusing you, because your server is really slow, or down. It really sometimes gets annoying.

Yes, I have asked rackshack twice. but they just answer me
with "highly traffic will cause it".
Ha....
