Hi,
I'm looking for a new host for my site which is in the process of being rebuilt/redesigned. it will have very little traffic for the next 2-6 months.
Here are the basics what I'm looking for.
reasonable price.
Unix server
50 to 100 m disk space to start
3-5 gig bandwidth (will use less then a gig the first few months)
cgi
perl 5.
php 4
my sql
sendmail
ssi
js
50+ or unlimited pop email accounts
autoresponders
mail fowarding
ftp
5 or more sub domains
ssl/secure server (shared cert a plus)
shopping cart (one that works with no limit on products and able to customize)
custom error pages
password protected directories
control panel (all features on it should be compatible with Macs)
30 day money back guarantee
good uptime (and not currently having server problems or cgi problems especially on weekends.)
good server speed
quick response by support.
the following is not required but would be a plus
smtp
webmail
extra domain parking 2-3
No setup fees
maillists

The host I'm with now has had some major server problems over the last month and still has some problems their trying to get fixed. I am and have been redirecting my domain to an old site (hosted elsewhere for now) while I do the redesign/rebuild. since I work a 8-5 during the day that leaves nights and weekends to work on it and that seems to be when all their problems start. its a little difficult to set up scripts when all you see is blank pages half the time.
Any suggestions would be welcomed.
or if you need e-mail me.
thanks

No not apollohosting. I'm with one thats growing to fast for their own good. They have decent customer support. just not enough experience with the hardware.
or at least thats the impression I'm getting.

Hi,
Take a look here: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=3053

There, you will find many hosts that frequent this board. I'm sure you'll find a host there that will meet your requirements.

Good Luck on your project!

From what I've heard, they have bad support, but I haven't seen a real thorough review.

Well actually Kdawebservices servers are VDI based and they might be fantastic but their site is a bit misinformative stating they are at UK.

I'm not really sure, but I think I read some negative things about Atom Host. You might want to do a little more research.

They are a UK based company. I never stated and i havent seen anywhere on there site that it says there servers are based in the uk.

Yes, you are right, but don't you think that you ought to know where the servers are located. And in this case Glassman might even consider Kda. as atleast their servers are in the US.

I myself got a bit tired when looking for European host with servers in Europe, many hosts claming to be for example based in Sweden when their servers were actually in the US. It's just extra trouble always looking are they really close to me or not.

If you ask where kda's servers are based they will gladly tell you they keep no secrets from there customers (as far as i am aware).

Most uk hosts are getting servers in the USA because of bandwidth issues. You get more for the £ at KDA.

I'm not questioning that but still you have to ask > extra trouble. Why not say it on their site and maybe explain why the servers are in the USA.

I would say that most hosts (everywhere) have servers in the USA because of the reasons you stated. But I don't think that you would gladly sign up to a UK based company with servers in Singapore even if they were cheaper...

Yes, it is true that we don't state our servers are in the USA but we are redeveloping parts of our site at the moment and one such page is the network information page. We have no secrets that we are hosted by VDI - in fact we are quite proud of it.

Thanks for the comments everyone.
On the UK issue it's not so much as where the servers are (with so many hosts being either vdi or alabanza based) its more a question of time zones, currency exchange, etc . I have nothing against the UK but for me a north American host makes more sense.
Anyway I am still interested in comments on atom host. also I'm looking at http://www.jaguarpc.com the only drawback is they have the akopia shopping cart the features it offers are great for a free cart but trying to configure/customize it is a pain and there doesn't seem to be any clear detailed info on it..
thanks

Hi,
Akopia has indeed been difficult to get running correctly. Check this cart out:
http://www.theexchangeproject.org
MUCH easier to admin, IMO

Akopia's cart is very easy to manage and customize. The inital install of the cart puts out a template as a rough draft. Which can be changed very easily. I love that cart but it has since stopped operating for some unknown reason. I have been looking high and low for a cart finally found this one http://Zelerate.org . Which is also http://zelerate.com . The exchangeproject is buggie, outdated and well to be honest a real pain in my butt. I am glad you said he's running that cart :) and I'll be glad to help you with it if you would like. But you might ask him if he can install a different one for you :)

Thanks Newbie and RotoHost,
I took a look at zelerate, not bad think I'll download it and check it out. The problem I've had with Akopia is I cant get another catalog made  besides that demo store. It was preinstalled through the cp. Anyway I found out atom hosting is going to be switching to new servers (vdi?). so I think I'll stay away from them at least until all the moves are over with. I just went through that last month with my current host. :( .
thanks again

Your Welcome, Glassman you'll want to delete most of that stuff out of the SQL database as far as all their entries in it through phpmyadmin for the demo cart atleast that's what I have done. Far as the page layout goes if you go into the admin area then into the site design, there are templates there that list how the pages look. It really is pretty simple..If that's confusing just go in the file manager and change the layout by hand.

The Zelerate cart is somewhat harder at the moment and I am still reading all the manuals and user guides which is about 250 pages. This of course excludes any bugs along the way which I am over joyed to experience <yea right>. It is easier to do in someways and confusing in others but seems like I am going to like it as a nice replacement to Akopia, I would rather have Akopia because I already know most of what I needed to do a cart. But people in hell want icewater so I'll manage :) .. You may not like zelerate as the set-up can become a royal pain in the butt!!!!! well VDI is hugely talked about on here as one of the Favorite NOC's. I know what you mean about moving though I absolutely hate it!!! because all sorts of stuff comes up and well it's a pain.

Well Gook Luck Glassman :) RotoHost let me know how things go with the Zelerate cart :)
