View Full Version : Reliable VOIP providers in Canada?
WireNine 07-19-2007, 05:12 PM Which companies are providing reliable service in Canada? I have tried Primus, and Zingotel both extremely unreliable. I am looking for a company that delivers what it promises, no hidden charges or contracts. Do not need the cheapest service, just reliability and prompt support :)
Primus had continous issues with reception and technical issues with the service being down for several hours.
Zingotel apparently promises unlimited residential service, however if you talk more than a 2-3 hours daily then they will charge you overage.
EvilMan 07-19-2007, 05:59 PM Most voip providers makes you enter into these contracts of service, even Vonage.CA!
rasputin 07-19-2007, 06:39 PM I've got Vonage and Nuvio here in the states. They both have their good and bad points. Nuvio seems capable of porting more numbers than Vonage in some obscure areas and a bit more business friendly, though with Nuviou you have to buy their phones.
They both have the same MTA, and on the residential side, they are both comparable with Nuvio being a bit more expensive.
I'm not sure if either have service in Canada. I've also used Comm Partners, but found they were very unreliable. The VoIP only worked in one direction. They were very aggressive and good at getting numbers as well..
I'd take a look at Nuvio though first. I think it is nuvio.com
Good luck.
Josh-D 07-19-2007, 06:41 PM vontage isnt bad in canada :). I have used them..
Justin 07-24-2007, 02:22 AM Ali if you're looking for a VOIP that has good connectivity and some redundancy I'd highly suggest/recommend callwithus.com - Currently using their DID services and their outbound on occasion. Their system uses two sip servers so should one fail the other picks up the slack. From my experiences thus far their site has had issues once or twice however their sip service/backend has yet to see a major failure that I'm aware of.
Keep in mind it's a US based provider however I'm fairly certain they do offer several Canada prefixes too.
Rahil 07-25-2007, 04:56 PM I'd be interested in knowing some good Canadian, VoIP providers as well.
WireNine 07-26-2007, 01:20 AM Still on the hunt for one. Theres not a wide variety to choose from.
excessnet 07-26-2007, 06:19 PM I've got Vonage for 1+ year, no problems at all... work good !
www.vonage.ca
I've heard that www.unlimitel.ca is pretty good too... got an avantage over vonage... you can have your own SIP/IAX PBX (Like Asterisk) !
wsuff 07-26-2007, 09:09 PM http://www.voicemeup.com has been good my stuff out of Canada. It depends what you are after though. I use their On Demand Calling package and just use them for termination/origination for clients that require services in Canada but they offer packages as well.
Any specific concerns or questions that I might be able to answer can be asked via PM. And no I don't get any commission etc =) Just heard of them thru an associate and been quite pleased with it thus far.
warrive 07-29-2007, 10:20 PM Kwihosting is one good hosting in canada too! I am not sure if they provide voip, do check with them if you are interested.
EuroVPS/Director 07-30-2007, 05:02 AM After experiencing countless VOIP so-called providers, I found a true VOIP provider.

10/10 Rating from a commercial user.
The worst 'provider' of all time is Nikotel
bugsyman73 07-30-2007, 06:35 PM ahahah are you sure eurovps ?

Please read this carefully.
Your service *WILL* be disrupted if you don't read this fully, and act on it.
You are receiving this e-mail because you have DIDs that may STOP WORKING August 23rd, 2007.
The DIDs in question are listed further down in this e-mail, but please read this first.
As long as these DIDs are active on your account, you will receive these e-mails.
There is no option to un-subscribe from this particular mailing.
LES.NET was notified that its primary carrier for USA DIDs will cease operation by August 23rd in certain areas.
LES.NET has already solicitied a replacement carrier, and will port the affected numbers to the new carrier.
Further down in this email is a list of your DIDs, and whether they are affected by this shutdown.
Here are your Options: You may do this for one, some, or all of your DIDs.
(a) Cancel The DID
- If you're not using the DID, or don't need it anymore, you may CANCEL the DID.
- To Cancel a DID, send email to voip@les.net, Subject: CANCEL DID (and then the number(s))
- This will ultimately reduce the number of DIDs ported to the new carrier.
(b) Keep the DID
- There may be a service disruption with the DID on and after August 23rd.
- By keeping the DID, you risk service disruption.
- There is no requirement to notify LES.NET if you intend on keeping the DID.
(c) Port Out the DID
- Find an another carrier for the DID, and LNP/Port the DID to the other carrier.
- To make this appear on our Radar, so it gets #1 Top Priority Execution...
- Please send email to voip@les.net with the Subject: WILL PORT OUT (and the number)
- This will let us know that you are actively seeking an alternate solution.
LES.NET Advice:
If the number is very important, then start porting it out now.
The carrier who ports out first will win.
If the number is ported to LES.NETs new carrier first, you can continue using LES.NET for the DID service.
If the number is ported to Your New carrier first, then they can take it from there.
DeltaAnime 07-30-2007, 07:29 PM What about shaw digital phone?
I don't think it's 100% VOIP, rather phone actually over the cable line, but they give good deals and a ton of long distance and such.
We used it at my old work in Victoria and it worked great, never any issues.
Thanks,
~Francisco
wmcyow 08-04-2007, 09:08 PM I have had vonage for a couple of years - in the beginning it worked well - but the last few months I have found the service declining. Lots of echo on the line - callerID not working properly - dropped calls etc.
johnseeham 08-08-2007, 01:20 AM I have a small company based out of Toronto and we spent a while looking for a voice over ip provider who could also do a hosted pbx system for us so that everyone could have an extension and transfer calls to each other. We went with EasyOfficePhone.com who set us up with these IP Telephones which plug into our routers. The sound quality is great (I used to use vonage and it wasn't great all the time). We also have a main menu so that people can call someones extension and be connected to their phone from one number.

pokeme 08-07-2008, 11:24 AM in the last 3 months hes been falling apart... echo on inbound, no answers at biz phone, no answers on emails.. and cant port out since numbers on a po box address and cant get them to help.. now this.. so i started to move to voicemeup.com ..
I also suffered from the same situation at that time and also switched to VoiceMeUp around the same time as you did. I'm customer since almost a year now and I am very happy with their custommer service, their control panel is amazing and really saves us a lot of time when we want to add new numbers to our account.
Echelon 08-09-2008, 02:29 PM I've always stuck with VoiceNetwork.ca for my needs, and they've always been great in providing me quality service.
Happy with VoicePulse. Been with them for two years now. If you run your own VoIP system you can use their Connect Service. Works great with Asterisk or Trixbox.
alex6999 08-13-2008, 12:18 AM I have 2 voip phones
one acanac.ca - $120/year, unlimited long distance usa/canada, limited to call 50 number
second vbuzzer.com - $50/year or $25/year(sometime they have this promoted price) toronto in/out. Residential service.
blaisen1 08-13-2008, 11:49 AM If you want professional business quality service use Unlimitel. They go directly to TDM and serve many markets in Canada. A lot of the other providers either resell from other VOIP providers or only have TDM connectivity in a couple of large centres. Unlimitel isn't the least expensive out there but their quality is VERY good.
chrisoverly 08-13-2008, 12:28 PM You could always try Acanac, I used them for about a year without any problems other than 1 and that was when their fiber got cut by a construction project.
blaisen1 08-13-2008, 12:31 PM I would really stay away from some of the bargain providers for business use.
chrisoverly 08-13-2008, 12:35 PM it actually was not that bad, their techs even helped us with our Trixbox installation and setup, you just have to get someone who knows what they are doing (which is never easy in the tech field)...
:)
blaisen1 08-14-2008, 08:05 PM I would like to retract my recommendation of Unlimitel. We've been with them for a few years and every year there is a bit of an outage and well.. it's to be expected from time to time I guess.
Well today (which is kind of ironic or whatever after posting something nice about them so recently) our main business 800 line has been down ALL afternoon. In fact, it's 8pm and still not fixed.
When I originally contacted them (or rather him, I guess it's kind of a one-man-show) earlier in the afternoon after noticing our phone hadn't rang in about an hour, I got a response that Bell has some problems for a couple minutes but it was fixed now.
Nope, not fixed, so I replied back. He'd open another ticket. Well, it's been about 4 hours since that and nothing. Still doesn't work... guess he's gone home for the day.
For service priced at the high end of the various VOIP offerings out there I guess I would have expected a little more... I mean, shouldn't they have some kind of redundancy? How about a 24 hour contact centre?
So stroke them off the list of reliable VOIP providers in Canada.
Titanous 08-21-2008, 09:43 AM You should take a look at babyTEL (babytel.ca). I've heard good things about them. Personally, I use Asterisk with various DID providers.
