Hi all. I am using tera-byte windows hosting and want to build another website using UNIX server.
Does anyone have idea of Econo
Virtual Host of Hurricane Electric? (http://www.he.com/hosting_prices.html)

Hurricane Electric is an extremely reputable company. They carry a lot of larger hosts and businesses. Uptime and professionalism should still be top-notch, as it was when I left them in the fall of 2000. Why did I leave? I had a hosting offer I could not pass up and my new host did not disappoint. They are expensive, at least when it comes to dedicated hosting. There bandwidth prices are some of the most expensive (though they've come down), and they charge you for things like if you want root on your leased dedicated box - like $250. If reliability is your desire, I'd have no qualms about recomending them. HE.net is a good company.

...Heck, they even sent me a free Leatherman after a couple years of hosting. :)

<edit>
Looking at their current Virtual Host prices, they seem to be reasonable. You won't get a control panel with them - you'll be getting a more "pure" Linux experience to put it in a positive light.

Like Brian said, HE have a very good reputation and you can't go wrong with them.

Good luck.

I think $250 is for base install of OS ;)

EXTREMELY? Since when? They are not reuptable. If a sysadmin hasn't blocked their servers from the crap that comes out of their IP space, they are only asking to be bombarded with DDOS, DOS, and spam from their users. Their customer service bites, they do not answer emails and ignore complaints when they are made. Im surprised that anyone would even consider in still carrying their traffic.

Give you and idea of their less than stellar performance:

Google Groups : He.net (http://groups.google.com/groups?as_q=he.net&safe=images&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&as_ugroup=news.admin.net-abuse.*&lr=&num=100&as_scoring=d&hl=en) nearly 5000 threads alone.

Dont know about you, but I have blocked he.net 's traffic since early this year. My spam count has gone down by two fold since then and a report about a DOS attack on my server went unanswered .

I used to have a virtual account with he.net, it was superb. They have an awesome network over there.

$51 for 1 GB extra bandwidth? WOW, I think that's a bit too high. You can probably find a better deal elsewhere.

Funny you should ask about Hurricane Electric... I just got done firing off yet another email to their abuse department about a UBE spammer they are harboring.

They don't seem to mind that they are about to loose a long time customer (me) due to them simply not enforcing their TOS.

Guess money talks, and the spammer is spending more. :(

Oh? ... This week alone I just sent in 147 complaints about a DOS attack as well as a alpha attack spam on my server. Not counting the 10 I just sent in for the hotmail acct I have that is nothing but a spam trap so I know what ip's to block.

They ignore complaints, and rather keep their spammers and abusers than legit customers. They need to charge cheaper prices to lure :legit; customers so they can use these legit customers as a shield against Blocklists to make their system seem sound.

People say the same thing about RackShack.Net. OTOH, when I ran a free hosting service on a dedicated at HE.net, I was bombarded with spammers abusing my service. I appreciated that they didn't have a the trigger-finger "pull the plug first, ask questions later" mentality.

For every 10, there's at least one angry one. I can only speak from my experience and those whom I've spoken with.

Well if Spammers were DOS-ing a server in my DataCenter, I would not ask one question I would immediatley remove the server from the network then call the server owner and get the problem resolved. I'd rather have one unhappy customer then have all of my customers pissed off because of network outages.
*I don't own a dataceter, I am just speaking hypothetically.

:agree: He.net is a great company - especially quality bandwidth!

It is a company focused on the physical stuff - servers, connections, etc, and less on the personal, intimate support

I was a bit sceptical about Hurricane Electric being spam friendly. Until I started recieving spam from a customer of theirs, that is. So far I have forwarded it to abuse@he.com twice using spamcop.net and twice directly. I have tried writing to support@he.com twice, to postmaster@he.com once and even to info@he.com once. All these e-mails went unanswered. What's even more despicable is that the spam I'm getting from them is a PORN spam, advertising a bunch of sites with Asian and Japanese porn, judging by their domain names. What if my e-mail address actually belonged to an 11 year old?! Hurricane Electric is losing my respect very fast lately. I will probably not going to be renewing the constract with them when the current one is up.

Have you ever tried phoning them up about the situation? Maybe if you were to talk to a real human representing the company you maybe be able to get something done about your problem...

Just some advice...:cartman:

Should I block Asia, and South Europe, because most the SPAM to my trap account comes mostly from there?

I guess, I need to block Verio, and Exodus also because I get a lot of SPAM from within their DCs.
