I was just wondering where some server providers get the hard drives for their servers. I had 2 hd failures in a period of 15 days (the servers are not mine I have reseller accounts on these servers, but that's not the point). I guess they buy the cheapest things they find and they give it to the hosts and the hosts to us. I know that these aren't problems or faults of the hosts that provide me the reseller accounts but problems of the companies that provide the servers. These 2 hd failures happened on 2 different hosts that have their servers on 2 different companies.
The situation really sucks...because if we continue this way, I think that both hosts and resellers we'll have to move out of the market. And don't tell me that these things happen. No it's the cheap material the base of the problem. And then the guys dare to ask 150$,200$+ for a server. They shouldn't even dare to ask 15$ for servers that break that often. I'll be glad to give to all those big names the computers that retired and dumped , from a school near to my house, maybe this way hosts and resellers will get a better service. It's time people to become a bit more honest and less greed.
I was ready to buy 2 servers next month...you know from all the known companies...we talk everyday in here...but after this, I guess I'll wait for a long time...make my savings and then give the money to somebody reliable...which I can't find..but that's another problem.
I note here, that I have no problems with the hosts that provide me the reseller accounts (which I'll never name, as they're doing fine). The problem is the server providers. I won't make names..as my post has not this scope.

wouldnt this be the fault of the maker of the hard drive? and not the provider of the server?

I think that it's not the hd maker's fault...because everyone knows that aren't all hard drives made to work in servers with all the heavy duties and 24x365 hours turned on and spinning, and the constructors almost always say how much work their product can handle.
If the providers of the servers were placing quality hardware in their boxes, made to work in servers, for sure I wouldn't have faced 2 hd failures in 15 days.
Anyway there is no reason to say all these things. Actually I'm feeling stupid touching this argument. I know how the things going and will go. Some people will eat the **** of some bigger guys and they will also pay them the 200$(or how much they pay) every month. Fine.

oh i get it...
you want a $6000 server built for you to use...
oh yeah.. but you only want to pay $150/month.
the truth of the matter is... no matter what type of hardware you buy... about 10-20% of it will be bad right off the shelf. It jsut happens that way. Granted it really sucks when your hard drive on the server fails... but thats what backups are for.

20% will be bad from the shelf? I wonder where you get these statistics. You'd better change hardware provider.
And nobody asked a 6000$ server for 150$ or anything. But I see that you "hold" the truth my friend, so no need for more discussing. Back to work now...and counting...1...2....3....4...till the new hd failure.
Have a nice day :)

No. If your numbers would be for real all computer companies would go bancrupt in a second.

You get what you pay for.
How do you think servers for $99 or $150 per month are possible? Cheap integrated mainboards, cheap IDE drives not built for server usage, and so on...

They probably build these servers with 1 ghz durons and 40 gig hds and 512 megs of ram for $400 dollars or less.

Walter makes an excellent point here. Good quality servers are not cheap.
The bottom line is the person who is providing you with the server chooses the hardware that goes in the server, so it's their responsibility if it fails.
