I am in the need for billing software similar to Modern Bill. I was planning on purchasing modernbill as it seems like the best option, but I have heard a lot of stories on here how buggy modern bill is. Now that we need this solution, it has me wondering what would the best solution be to solve this problem.

We need a smooth way to handle reoccuring billing and at some point intergrate it to the rest of our systems.

Anyone use Modern Bill and have good success? Anyone use something else and have good success?

WHMCS (http://www.whmcs.com/index.php) is the best I've used. Give their free trial a whirl.

Another vote for WHMCS too. Steer well clear of WhoisCart as they are really arrogant.

I'll cast my vote for WHMCS. They easily have as many or more features than most of the competition, and are half the price. :agree:

Is WHMCS focused on hosting market only or can you use it for other businesses as well? I am looking for a billing solution that is not limited to hosting market.

WHMCS is not limited to the hosting market, though it certainly is aimed at it. You could use it for other businesses that require a monthly billing solution, but if you're simply looking for a shopping cart you might want to consider osCommerce. But again, for monthly billing WHMCS cannot be beat.

We have a shopping cart for typical purchase items, but we have a need for reoccuring billing for subscription users.

Does WHMCS support sending out branded invoices (paid of course) each time someone is charged similar how a shopping cart does it?

Would it be difficult to intergrate to a non-hosting control panel? It is more of a user portal really very little intergration, just mainly allow customers to see their bills and change credit cards and such.

Sure, you can do that.

WHMCS would be a good choice in this situation. They have a two-week free trial, so that you can evaluate the suitability to your application, and then you can choose a leased or owned license if it works out for you.

I heard a lot of horror stories about ModernBill, especially 5.x, and that 4.x is just too old.

WHMCS is my vote here. I love the software and Matt provides great support for it. He also listens to feature requests! Very customizable and easy to use. Give it a go.

WHMCS is good but I'm gonna give CE3 a go today. I just don't like the way some things a handled in WHMCS and I don't like that it tries to support so many things and how quickly new features are introduced into the script. I know most people will look for this quick deployment of new features but it could cause security bugs to be overlooked.

I've been using ClientExec 3.0 for a little while, and I can confirm that it is noticeably faster than any other previous version. The extra features are welcomed, especially the affiliate plugins... and the overall security has been significantly improved from previous versions.

If anyone is still using the 2.8.x versions, I would highly recommend upgrading.

Have they installed the support/faqs module into 3.0 yet? I read some time ago they were going improve on this area.

No, the FAQ's module hasn't been added in the 3.0 stable release.

Looking at the language file, I do see several reverences to a FAQ module or system... so hopefully soon for those who use the built-in support system.

ClientExec 3.0 looks very promising. We're using WHMCS currently and I like it a lot. It's also easy to integrate with your site. It has a lot of feature and like any other software, it needs some getting use to. It also has support feature and is very suitable for hosting.

I have only used ModernBill in the past, though with my upcoming project (Hosting4Budgets), I will be using WHMCS. I hear that it has a much better support desk in it, compared to ModernBill, which I think has a very crappy support desk.

Modernbill's support desk is definitely not the best. However, we have been using the v4 version for a few years and are quite happy with it. The only thing we may change to is Ubersmith.

WHMCS Cons: No live chat (though there are user contributions for integrating with Kayako). Can't think of anything else really.

WHMCS Pros: Upgrades are frequent; CSA Matt responds to your questions on their forums (http://forums.whmcs.com/); the code is solid; the layout is very logical; customization is easy; the only 'branding' is one line in the footer; leased licenses are as cheap as $10.95/mo; using the product has been described as 'crazy simple'; many things that you are doing manually now are automated by WHMCS features (http://www.whmcs.com/features.php).

Can you intergrate with Kayako and use it's HelpDesk/KnowledgeBase/LiveChat and such without using WHMCS's easily? We are a big fan of Kayako although we believe they are one the worst companies on the planet, they have a great product. We were plannign on sticking with Kayako for the support center side of things.

Plug-in description: "It allows your customers to utilize the same login details from their WHMCS Client Login and plug it into the Kayako Login Box and have it log them in."

If you check out the WHMCS forums and under User Contributions they have a loginshare and integration attempt for Kayako, I have tried neither but both seem like decent options and we'll probably be using the loginshare in the near future. You could also edit the links in WHMCS to make the ticket, helpdesk and announcement links point to Kayako.
