hi i'm thinking of buying a domain name and then trying to resell it to make a profit. i was wondering wheather its a good option and what kind of names are best to go for to make money on i.e. business type names etc. Also are long names or names with - or online at the end etc a bad idea to try and sell with
thanks

You may want to visit dnforum.com to talk with other domain speculators. I have learned alot over there.

dont worry about extension.
if you want to sell it at a profit, i think the extension is important.
You are only likely to fetch a good price if it is a .com
Of course there are exceptions, but .com sells for much more than any other extension.

Anyone think dot coms are the same as other extensions if free to register them, but I advise dot coms only.

I love www.dnforum.com problem is that it is so nice that it is currently over it's bandwith limit - I would host it if my servers were not so sucky :(

I also recomend these two for anyone who wants to learn more:

Thanks for the plug, DotComster (second cup of coffee for today yet?) :D

I've no doubt DNF is high in traffic; they are ranked like 10,000 according to Alexa rankings. That's insane, for a domain less than 1 year old.

On the other hand, my 12 Gb/mo plan won't be reached any time soon :D

In all fairness, Alexa rankings mean absolutely nothing. Just so happens DNF was fortunate enough to appeal to users that have an Alexa toolbar installed.

Here is an example of how off Alexa's system is:

Rapmusic.com's message board has 54,000 registered members, and 4,000,000 posts on it's vBulletin. About one hundred times larger then DNF, yet it is ranked 53,000th.

Yeah I know the system is geared towards users of the toolbar, still an impressive feat :D

50k is not bad either, I've managed 265k so far, currently lower at 300k.
