What does it take to set up a domain registration service to go along with your hosting?

If I have a server, could I set up a domain registration program on it? How much does it cost to set this up?

Well prob. the two most popular methods today are eNom and OpenSRS. Search the forums for that and I'm sure you'll find a lot of information.

We've an eNom reseller, so feel free to contact me for more information.

Most registrars allow reselling. eNom, OpenSRS, GoDaddy, Dotster, etc all allow it :)

I would recommend staying AWAY from Dotster's program though.

What is the problem with dotster Jeremy? What company do you use for domain registration, what is your recommendation?

Thanks,
Peter

puggy106,

Do they handle the payments for you like dotster do? What is the bulk price you are getting?

Thanks,
Peter

If you are going to recommend such, you should at least post briefly the reason why...

Personally, I have used Dotster for a couple of years and have not encountered any problems.

Same here - both their IR program (although I mainly use it for myself to get domains @ US$12) and their domain registration and haven't had a problem.

I'd love to hear why we shouldn't use them - it's all well and good to say "staying AWAY from Dotster's program", but I would like to hear a reason to back up this statement.

Sorry, I should have specified that :) Slow, integration system isn't what it's cut out to be, payouts are slow, client-admin tools are fuggly, support is nonexistant... Not really sure I need to go on, especially when many other registrars give you cheaper prices :)

One good thing is that it was easy to setup.

I've had to contact Dotster Support several times over the years and they've always respond within about 12 hours (although I could just be lucky).

Telephone support is non-existent though... you call, get placed in a queue and then about 10 minutes later it says there are no operators available and hangs up on you - very frustrating, especially when calling from Australia and paying per minute international rates.

The IR interface I will admit is a bit clunky and slow - I'm still unsure if I'll use their reseller system when I add domain registration to our line of services or not.

I've had emails go unanswered for weeks at a time becuase they were "placed in a queue we didn't know existed"... Well done.

I'm with them now but since we're getting HSphere we'll be going with OpenSRS instead.

I'm with enom, and we really like them. Certainly better than lots of other registrars. Mail me if you have questions about them.

I also use eNom, and I've found them excellent for reselling domains. You can use their RegistryRocket, PDQ, or just register them manually and assign a password to the domain and point your customers to the online control panel.

Cheers!

I personally prefer my option, but thats partially cause the registar I deal with doesn't seem to work weekends either. So I do the signups manaully. Nice feature about them though is the administration panel has an option to apply changes, either dns, or a contact info, to all domains, or only certain ones, at the same time. way easier when changing/adding new nameservers :)

Everyone, thanks for your replies.

I'll research each of those solutions.
