View Full Version : Rackspace pricing?

Ok, rackspace is a well-established company which aims at the upper end of the dedicated server market. They use high quality components, they replace anything that breaks ASAP, they offer good support. So you'd normally expect their prices to be a bit higher than average.

That said, their prices seem, well, a little bit excessive.

For example, throwing an additional 256MB of RAM into a server costs roughly $70/month, plus a $70 increase in the setup fee. What sort of memory are they using? I can buy 256MB of PC133 micron SDRAM for $70.

When I first stumbled onto rackspace's site six months ago, the prices seemed reasonable. Six months later, without any noticable changes, the prices seem rather rediculous.

Saying what you can buy for so and so, just isn't applicable when it comes to leasing servers. Sure, I understand it, but realize that is their pricing structure and you can either:

Ask them if they will reduce the price for you.
Lease the server somewhere else.
Build/buy your own and colocate it somewhere.

Our servers are located there although we are looking for a new place to go RackSpace is top notch. They would be my first choice if the CP3 was only a one time fee. They have the best tech support I have ever seen and they are willing to work with you on prices. All you need to do is call them. The only reason that we are leaving is because we are still paying 200 a month extra for each CP3.

Even I have my 2 systems with Rackspace and feel the same.

They will nearly kill you when upgades are taking place. With this it is unlikely that we would renew our contract with them. Tech support is very good but it would just not be affordable to pay such high amounts on upgrades.

And yes they will negotiate price with you . We had done it for bandwith and got an additional 10 Gigs a month free.
You just have to ask them.

But it could be a lot better if they were more reasonable.
Is there anybody here from Rackspace who is listening. Or are they too big a company to listen to us.

when i was on rackspace they wanted to charge me a additional monthly fee for the upgrade and the setup fee was 150% of that upgrade fee

so if it cost me US$200 additionally monthly for an upgrade the setup fee would be US$300

i had to move

Just one word 'Ridiculous'

I hope they realize this or else many of their clients would switch as their needs expand.

One of the reasons RackSpace is so expensive is that they're offering "managed" servers; if you compair their prices with the managed-server prices of someone like HostPro, RackSpace is not so expensive. (Look at the prices on HostPro's website for managed servers (http://www.hostpro.com/hosting/dedicated/managed_linux.html) to see what I mean.)

Agreed they provide managed services,

But this does nnot mean that they should charge anything. If Memory is 100 $ i would not mind paying upto 300 $ for it. Just bcos its R.s ,
But definately not so much

I guess what people should do is go with R.s , learn the nitty-gritty things involved in handling a linux system and then probably make a switch.

What say,

But i still believe that if the do not charge such high a premium they are likely to lose a lot less customers.
There definatel has to be a premium with R.S but cannot be infinite.

Thats untrue, rackspace seldom uses amd processors, or at least thats hwat I got from the horses mouth

Nope

I ordered a new server which is a 650 mhz system and it is indeed and Amd cpu.

When contacted they told me that they use pentium only on duel cpu machines or if i want pentium on single cpu machine then 100 dollars extra to my monthly lease amount.

Hmm do you know if that was recent I talked to them about 6 months - 1 year ago and they were very adamant about not using amd cpu's, makes me mad if they were lying to me...

Actually August 15, 2000
Summary: Processor type ?
SUGGESTED SOLUTION:

Hello,
We install AMD and Athlon processors on all our servers. Our motherboards are most compatible with this, some of them are only comaptible with AMD.

Hello,
All proc except for the Dual procs are Athlons. The Dual procs are Pentium because there are no Motherboards that support Dual Proc Athlons. That would leave the Dual 650 and 750 as Pentium III.

My 1st server that i took from them was in Aug 2000. Now that is between 6Months - 1 year.

Yes it is also Amd. 500 Mhz system.

But inspite of that i went with them on second server in Nov (Again an Amd). Only reason, Brilliant support. If only they were a bit more economical on their upgrades etc, they would have a lot more loyal customers.

I am sure many out here will agree.

Yes eva2000 , we did discuss the same on the R.S Ubb. Nice to see you here

I have no knowledge either way, though I will throw out a small tidbit that might be interesting... en, the person who complaining about cwhosting (something like that), and the server being up and down, etc., is (or was at this point?) on a rackspace server.

Not sure if anyone else realized that.
