Hello,

I'm looking for a VPS host, somewhere in the mid-range as far as price and fairly dependable and reputable. I've looked at RemarkableHosting and Tera Byte. Are there any other good VPS hosts that the users of this forum can recommend?

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeff,

I've seen numerous VPS offers in the special offers forum. You might check there for some more VPS providers.

I haven't had a VPS with anyone so I can't really recommend anyone, but the special offers forum might help you find more options.

Good luck.

Combustion Web Hosting, Verio. Sales at Hostrocket said their shared accounts were on VPS servers.

Thank-you, WebmastTroy and Nightstalker. Actually, I want to rent my own Virtual Private Server, and to clarify, I'm looking for a largish, well-known provider that most people on this forum know. I'm not familiar with the hosting business, so I don't know the obvious players.

It seems to me there is a shakeout going on in the internet business, so I would like to go with a company who is going to be around for a year or more. I looked at Verio/NTT last night, and added them to my list of possibilities along with RemarkableHosting and Tera Byte.

Thanks.

Well, Jeff, it might just be the big ones that go down first... something you might want to think about.

These guys are good. Pretty large, well established. They use Ensim.

It's possible, but recent history shows that if a "big one" goes down usually the result is just that the company is sold, or the hosting division is sold, or the individual accounts are sold. It's never the case that the client site operators one day simply find that their sites are inoperable, the phones are disconnected, and email to the host either goes unanswered or bounces. Such nightmares have only been the result of a "small one" going under.

Certainly that doesn't mean that choosing a small host is necessarily riskier or a bad decision, but if that kind of thing is your particular concern you are probably going to sleep easier having gone with, as Jeff put it, "a largish, well-known provider."

NTT/Verio's CEO will never pop in here to say that he has "a new girlfriend" and so has lost interest in the hosting business and the company is shutting down immediately. But long-time members have seen that very message from a hosting "CEO."

And we'll never see a post quoting NTT/Verio's upstream provider as saying that the outages experienced by the company's clients are because "certain contractually-agreed amounts" haven't been paid. But... well, you know...

Hello all,

Thank-you all for your recommendations. I have decided to go with a Private Virtual Server (http://www.remarkablehosting.com/psdetails.php) at Remarkable Hosting (http://www.remarkablehosting.com/). My decision was based on the positive comments I read in WHT, and the quick response to my emailed questions from the company. Also, their monthly rates are very reasonable, and they offer several plans that would be easy for me to upgrade to as my needs expanded. My web sites are non-profit and require few resources, but I do need root access for a couple of things, and so a "basic" virtual server plan fit my needs well.

I have been with Remarkable Hosting a week and a half, and so far it has been a very positive experience. After submitting my service activation request I received a personal email back within an hour (on Sunday) estimating the time it would take to get my account running. That was very reassuring. I've emailed three times with a question, and was answered within a half hour each time. I have some experience with unix server administration so operating my virtual server has been pretty straight forward. I haven't had any problems connecting or using the services.

I phoned their tech support once and it was answered by the company president on his cell phone as he was driving to the data center. He was very helpful. My impression is that this company is operated by a very driven, service oriented individual(s) who will take good care of my sites. I have been with five other hosting companies over the years, but so far I haven't had any "red flag" pop up with this one as I have with the others at some point. I don't see any indication that will change.

This is my experience so far. My sites are running fine with no problems, so unless you hear from me again, assume nothing has changed. I can recommend these folks.

Thank-you again for your input and pointing me in the right direction.
