Please do not take this as spam or a solicitation for business. If the moderators feel this belongs some place else, just let me know.

I am curious as to the current market for raq hosting. I don't see anyone advertising raq hosting any more. I own a few raq3s and 4s myself, but have only been using them for the odd project or DNS, not their intended purpose.

I have a few spare raq3s and some cheap, reliable bandwidth. I am considering setting a few of these up and renting them out at or very close to cost. Anyone think its worth the effort? Is their still a market for raq hosting out there?

Any comments welcome.

I don't know if there would really be a market for it, but I think it'd be neat.

Well people still do it! I have several customers that perfer it and it's a easy server to run.

If your going to be "hosting for strangers" I would suggest one of the big gui's like ensim, cpanel, etc...

We don't sell raq hosting on a regualr basis anymore, but we still have some raqs in service and do offer it. So I would say yes.....if you own them and it's no skin off your back, offer it.

Some people prefer cobalt raq.

If you have bandwidth you can run ShoutCast on them, i run some raq4r with Centos 4.5 / Strongbolt.

Raq-hosting is similar to hosting mac-server or mac-mini. There are not so much customers, but there are some ;-)

If you get the SHOUTcast Linux server (glibc) v1.9.8 you can run it on the RaQ4 on up...

the tarball from there includes only the basics. if there is a lot of interset I could build a pkg with a proper init.

A stock Raq3 or Raq4 will run a small number of moderate-demand sites, as long as the memory footprint isn't too high. It will run a large number of very simple (static) low-demand sites. The hardware has proven reliable. The biggest issue that you'll have is that the End of Life software for the 3s and 4s does not have many of the most recent security upgrades. Like gigzone above, I recommend running a CentOS+BlueQuartz solution like Strongbolt or the package from Nuonce.net.

As You are perfectly aware, I have been making updates for the RaQ's for a very long time. And you should also be aware that the RaQ's are much more stable then Strongbolt.

I think everybody knows that by now....
