Hi guys,
I recently have this mysterious problem that is bothering me.
I must firstly admit I am not an expert in configuring Error pages.
The problem is error 404 page works on some of the site and not for other site on my server. 404.shtml is already present as I added that using CPanel.

I tried tinkering with the .htaccess but I don't think it is the reason behind the problem because some of the site that has working 404 has no htaccess at all.

Checked out Frontpage Extension and they are not installed so that technology of Microsoft shouldnt be the problem.

What can be the problem here?

It could be the other way around.. you probably have an ErrorDocument directive in your global settings in httpd.conf that throws up 404.shtml on a 404, but some sites have .htaccess that overrides that setting

Also whats your AllowOverride setting in httpd.conf? and where is the 404.shtml stored and what kind of permissions exist for taht file?

Just a thought

Hi Motley,
The 404.shtml is stored at the root.
Do we need to set specific permission for it?
I thought Cpanel will do that for us.

This is really confusing me.

Roy,

When you say root, do you mean / of the server?

Can you tell me if the domains for which it works have an .htaccess file? Also for the domains for which it doesn't work?

There isn't enough info for me to diagnose here.

How did you create the 404.shtml document.. ? If it is thru CPanel you would have to do it for each domain is it not?

Please email balaji@valai.net and I will try and help you if I can. Also send me a copy of your httpd.conf file

You can also catch me on YIM: quillbox in another 2 hours

Cheers
