Hello,

We would like to create an online portal community for a local lake. I would like recommendations on opensource portal software. I would like something that integrates with an email server to provide them with email sevices, a forum, classifieds, a other common features.

Thank you,
Kyle

A nice portal/content management system I use is either Joomla or Mambo. Has some pretty nice features, is pretty simple to use and you can integrate many themes modules, componants and pretty much anything you like. And of course as it is open-source, its all free! :D

Also you should check out these: e107, Drupal, PHP-Nuke, Xoops - although I dont have any personal experience with these, they are supposed to be good :)

I Hope this has helped you.

I think why not try Wordpress and it can be used as a CMS and more over design themes that are Web 2.0 too.

Yeah Wordpress has come along way recently, you can get more modules and themes now. I recently installed Wordpess for the first time in ages, and was impressed what it can do now, and the simplicity. I wouldnt use it as a CMS though, as then for a new user it could maybe get a little complicated. But certainly worth a look at and trying out.

I would recommend Drupal. It has alot modules to support 2.0 environment. But it gonna cost you time to learn, as it requires steep learning curve.
