They offer $5.95 .com including privacy. Any thoughts on risks of just purchasing domain. They have been operating with a low cost model in Germany for some years offering .de. TOS issues say compared to godaddy? Thank you.

Oddly I have a friend who uses 1&1 and they hate it, and I read some reviews claiming that they had a ".info" advertisement where a lot of people got the .info domains for free, and then later were forcibly renewed 2 months prior to the year-date.
I have no sources and my memory is sketchy but you might want to check Google and do some reading yourself.
Always keep your domain names separate from your hosting company.

I tried them a couple years back and they were downright awful. I ran the other way ASAP.

What did you find awful about their service?
I may register a few domains with them and see how it goes.

I picked up a couple of the free .info from 1and1 and moved them elsewhere after 60 days...mostly to keep them with my others and to avoid the auto renew policy that 1and1 had then (might still do).
Course my domain registrar is gone now and considering 1and1 again

It was a long time ago. I cannot recall exactly but it was an issue with not leting me set the nameserver settings I wanted. Extremely bad problem and never had a problem with other registrars with that concern. When I called support I got ahold of one of the chief supervisors and he was extremely condescending to me.
So in short, they wouldn't work then they dissed me for it. Nice eh?

I have to agree with dynawebd, there service is awful. It took me over 2 and a half weeks to get them to let go of a domain for transfer, and every time I called they gave me the same excuse. It’s not our end, we have it let go. Come to find out the domain department had a lock on it so it could not be released, and they had no justification for doing it. We also did some hosting through them for a nonprofit website, and the support and services on that were as almost as bad as the domain names.
