Hello there,

Me and someone else are looking to start a hosting/webdesign outfit and Im wondering where does this scale in the whole realm of things....

I have (currently) a colocated:

P3 - 700
512mb
80gbHd

I am currently able to transfer 50gb/month without getting charged extra. This is costing me $100.00 month. Is this good/horrible... Or what? How many clients should I be able to have? After reading the forums I see that 50gb is nothing.. Unless you guys are totally overselling your bandwidth.. :D

Comments wanted :)

One more quick question... I wouldnt call myself a newbie to any thing to do with windows/linux (Hell, I even started writing my own Control Panel, Until I saw the sheer manhours that is required), when you set your DNS authoritative servers with internic or whoever, must the hostname and the IP address match each other?

Or if this is the complete wrong forum, feel free to tell me what an idiot I am...

Well, if you're not using all of it, then it's really moot. However, if you need more there are providers who will give you more for the same money.

Also, it depends on what providers your colo is provisioning bandwidth from. If this is an all-Cogent deal, then there are much better plans available.

Cogent? Can you Enlighten me?

Nah, Im using close to 500K / Month... That is with 1 site hosted. Its Right now hosted by LinuxWebNet in Virgina, which I recommend (Hi Kenny).. Its on a 10mbps switched port through skynetweb, and I dont know how much bandwidth LWN contracts for...

I'm sure many people on here will tell you otherwise, but that seems like a heck of a deal to me. Maybe colocation is just more expensive here in Kansas City, but I'd jump all over that if I needed somewhere to colo.

Hosting clients really depends on how much bandwidth you're going to allow them to transfer. The box can handle a lot I'm sure, but you're going to run out of bandwidth pretty soon if you just start plopping them on there.

I would ensure that they match, the IP box is probably for domain names that have not yet propagated correctly, but if you ask this question in the domain name forum, I'm sure someone can confirm/correct me ;)

HTH,

I'm pretty sure the A record has to point to the same ip that you have to specify. I'll back infinite on this one.
