View Full Version : Do Intel XEON's Make Good Web Server
bhausa 07-17-2002, 11:24 PM Anyone with experience with the 1.8 Ghz Prestonia XEON cpu's in a 1U form factor server? Is it reliable on a SuperServer Board?
Am comtemplating dual ones, with dual hd's in Raid 0 configuration for Web serving.
I am not sure about that specific config but we have multiprocessore Xeon servers (Compaq Proliant) in our office and they are doing very well :)
Xeon CPU has a considrable better performance in comparison to normal CPU's but I'm not sure about Cost/Performance ratio.

quicksols 07-18-2002, 03:17 PM My friend actually SELL compaq servers
XEON r way way way too high price. 700MHZ with 2mb cache can cost up to $1500 per CPU ONLY
I wouldnt really use that for Web servers Howevere if u ve a database servere or you are planning to offer lot of heavy cgi scripts and cpu intensive stuff then yea its good. Or cluster hosting or if u ve 3000-4000 domans on that box then yea otherwise get a dual p4 or Quad p-4
universal2001 07-18-2002, 04:26 PM yea xeons are really cool and fast.... But very expensive.. We got some in our university and although its meant to be for graphics rendering, alot of students use it to edit their Word documents....

It will be an ecommerce server with Linux O.S. and Apache 2 with Miva Merchant compiled for a startup company. Later, probably with streaming audio and video.

It will be a third the price of the major brands, and a bit on the riske' side with respect to warranty and service, but the components seem to be solid. Was looking at a UVNetwork's applicance, but have been tempted with this, since I have UNIX admin experience.
Thanks, BHausa

To save money I still suggest you consider Dual PIII platform.
Why?
1.) Because you will save a lot
2.) 1U cases are not the best for XEON processor(s)
3.) cheaper upgrades
4.) your colo provider may not have XEON spare processors in-house. And it may take up to a week or so to get a processor in case it fails. Your server is down = your business is down.
What RAID adapter (I suppose HW RAID) you want to use? In 1U case you will not have a lot of space. Less free space = less cooling.
Have you considered the streaming media type you will stream in the future? I am not Windows dude, but I will only suggest Windows asf streaming that comes with Windows 2000 server environment free of charge. It's easy to setup and handles high concurrent connections and is doing fine...
If you want to stream ASF files, then you will need Windows OS, thus another server! You see what I mean?
cabalstudios 07-19-2002, 12:01 PM Well,
You cant go wrong with Xeons, we have a couple of Quad Xeons with 1MB cache in production, and IMHO they are the most rock solid servers on the market....
They cost a lot, but if you need the power and resources and have the $$$s then look no further....... :D
apollo 07-19-2002, 12:43 PM Sure, they are good, but the use should justify the price!

bhausa 07-19-2002, 11:15 PM That is the advice I was looking for.
Thank you so much!
