neonlexx 07-17-2002, 08:15 PM try putting this in the webhosting requests form.
Bengal 07-17-2002, 08:29 PM could a mod move it for me please. I don't want to cross post.
ckpeter 07-17-2002, 08:30 PM Don't worry, a mod should move this soon.
You may also want to put in the desire price range.
Peter
edude 07-17-2002, 09:01 PM You get what you pay for - its not insane, you pay more you get better service etc..
you know the drill..

I disagree. Just because someone charges $500, doesn't automatically make it worth $500. Your mentality is exactly why setup costs are so ridiculous. Something is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

Maybe they need to pay staff members to build the server, configure the software, etc.
Samuel 07-17-2002, 10:21 PM And get IP's for it.
Bengal 07-17-2002, 11:46 PM  If some dude is making $500 to set up a single server, I am in the wrong god damn business. My guess? That's not the case.
ckpeter 07-17-2002, 11:50 PM Some hosts factor in the building cost of the dedicated server into the setup fee.
Peter
Bengal 07-17-2002, 11:59 PM Oh, I'm sure they "factor" in whatever necessary to justify their charges. It's funny that you can have 5 hosts offering the exact same packages, and all 5 charge vastly different setup fees. You can't tell me one host is spending $100 for RAM, while another is spending $5 for the same stick of RAM.
My opinion for what it’s worth… is just like any business, they are in it to make money. As long as people keep quiet and continue dishing out money, rates won’t change. However, nothing can lead me to believe that these high “setup fees” are completely going towards the cost of setup.
ckpeter 07-18-2002, 12:00 AM If you define the "cost of setup" as including the cost of the machine.
Peter
Bengal 07-18-2002, 12:03 AM When I rent a car, I’m paying a rental fee…. not paying for the car. If I wanted to buy the car, I wouldn’t be renting it.
edude 07-18-2002, 12:07 AM Very interesting discussion, but look at it this way, pay less and the dedicated host could be using cheap equipment in your server config...
Bengal 07-18-2002, 12:13 AM They could be doing that anyways... Most people are in a different state than their dedicated server. The host could charge outrageous prices and still fill it with cheap, generic crap. How would you know if they are doing this or not? In fact, I'm sure some not-so reputable hosts have gone this route. Yet another reason I refuse to pay some of these crazy setup fees. I encourage others to do the same.
WoodShedd 07-18-2002, 12:16 AM I am sure hosts have done that too.
when I had my server built I had my host send me copies of the recipts.
Bengal 07-18-2002, 12:22 AM One thing I’m very impressed with for sure is the response from members on this board with regard to my request. In a very short period of time, I have received numerous very reasonable offers from various hosts via email and PM. Thank you in advance for your responses!
