Hello,

I have (5) 36GB SCSI 10KRPM hard drives.

I want to use a much space (180GB) on the hard drives as possible, and I want to make sure the whole system wont go down due to one hard drive or the data get corrupted due to one hard drive.

Which RAID do you recommend for my case?

RAID5

I think RAID0, RAID1, and RAID5 are the most commons.

Let me do some research on google.com

You wrote that you wanted to maximize the available disk space, and your requirement was just that 1 disk could fail without breaking the array. Then RAID5 is the one to choose - RAID0/1 wouldn't maximize the available disk space.

Ok..I'll go with RAID5.

Thanks :D

Raid 5 - If one fails your still good to go but any more than that and you need to becareful because two or more discs failing at the same time and the array is lost. :D

If I don't use RAID and purchase a hugh size hard drive, then I'd have to rely on that one hard drive.

If I use RAID5, then the chance of two drives failing at the same time is lesser than 1 drive, I guess.

True thats why its there I suppose. Id go with a raid setup rather than 1 large drive.

RAID-5 but you will not get 180GB of available storage... I would say it will be effective untill you reach 120GB or so.....

By the way, what applications you will be running on the server? RAID configuration depends from the application type...

I understand that I would not get the full 180GB.
At least above 100GB is good enough.

I will be running Linux 7.2 on it.

if you've got 5x36GB setup RAID5, that would mean you've got about 144GB useable. that's ((36x5)-36)GB...still a lot of space. plus since you've got five drives it'even better. RAID5 needs a minimum of 3 drives. however if you use three and one drive fails, your drive performance would be severely affected. a minimum of four would maintain performance and five is even better!!!

raid 5 all the way.
