The other day, which was June 12, I was looking up at registering the domain name: autoidnia.com (who would think of such a name?! uncommon you say, right?). Come to register it today: Unavailable.

Do a whois to see whats up, and yes sir, person registered it on godaddy:

Domain Name: AUTOIDNIA.COM
Registrar: GO DADDY SOFTWARE, INC.
Whois Server: whois.godaddy.com
Referral URL: http://registrar.godaddy.com
Name Server: NS1.FASTPARK.NET
Name Server: NS2.FASTPARK.NET
Status: clientDeleteProhibited
Status: clientRenewProhibited
Status: clientTransferProhibited
Status: clientUpdateProhibited
Updated Date: 13-jun-2007
Creation Date: 13-jun-2007
Expiration Date: 13-jun-2008

Makes me think that Godaddy monitors domain searches or there is someone who can see what domain names are searched through godaddy and so they get ideas and they egister them if they can see potential traffic. What are your guys opinion on it? I'm flatly and in outright shock and disbelief!

Just because the registrar used is GoDaddy, it doesnt mean they actually registered the domain name for themselves.

Did you mention the domain name to anyone you know by any chance??

No I did not tell anyone.

Oh, this happened to me too, but I'm not sure which registrar.
I checked for my friend's name.
Next thing I know, this domain name was taken.
My friend didn't want that name anyway.. so we didn't care.
After a few week, domain name was back... available.
So, you might want to check back (give enough time, and don't visit that domain too often, give them the hint).

Good luck my friend.

Dude, you better not be talking about me.
And you will ask me if I drink a lot or ever had a psychiatric help.
I have BS degree in Computer, and I am a web developer.
Domain name was taken as soon as I checked the name. (within 24 hours). Then it was released after a few weeks. No question about it.

I think the website I used was dotster. But I cannot say for sure.

Weird stuff going on lol!

Even BS degree holders with a degree in Computers sometimes find they've been hacked with a keylogger. I'm not saying it has happened to you, but it is the confident ones who get the biggest surprises.

Now, everyone knows that GoDaddy's search is compromised, not by GoDaddy, but by some other tasting companies. I checked the whois for your domain. It doesn't look like any taster I'm aware of. It looks like an individual. This put's some creedence to you being attacked by a keylogger theory, since it's some individual in Belgium. The other possibility is that this was absolutely a coincidence. Which of these 2 theories do you subscribe to?

If he is a taster, the domain will almost certainly drop again after five days, and you will then be able to register it.

You are 100% correct on this :agree:

I have had exactly the same thing several time on godaddy AND several other Big hosts

First time it happened on godaddy I was apaplectic with anger!! NOBODY could have known that domain name and I didnt tell a soul..

Anyway, I wasnt paying through the nose for them so I left it and thought I would monitor the situation.
it was registered to Godaddy

iirc it was about a month or 2 later that (searching through a SAFE domain seller) I found the domains were magically available

How very odd...could it be that godaddy the scamming ******** were buying up names we search for, so peopl pay an inflated price to buy the name they wanted back?

SO I thought I would do a few tests to prove my theory correct...

I went to buy a bunch of names...really really BAD names that no one would ever think of or probably want. No surprise I dropped out before giving them 1 cent and went back a couple of days later to "make the purchase"

oh my, the domains were now taken. By godaddy

WHat a coincedence...so I did it again. and the same hting happened.

For any disbelievers, try it yourself!!!

Sign up for a free godaddy account.

and pretend to register a couple of names. Like

whatabigpoopoop.com

or something.

then leave the site before checking out. and go back a few days later :D

Bend Over Here It Comes Again

An acronym used in online chat, e-mail, or newsgroup postings.

You got it. But to be more exact:

Bend Over, Here It Comes Again - Used colloquially to indicate that an adverse situation is about to repeat itself.

Potentially adverse in this thread, anyway...

Registrars have the ability to register a name for about 2 months and delete it without paying anything for it. so it may brings them money if they register the names you whois them and don't register them.

but a registrar in the size of godaddy is not good for these kind of scams.
it may brings money to low-medium companies, but doesn't worth for a large company like godaddy to make their name dirty by these kind of scams.

and about key-logger theory, if someone infect you, he doesn't do it to only register your interesting names.
he may steal your paypal password, email password, godaddy login information and such.

the other theory is more logical IMHO. the domain may be stolen via packet sniffing or such.

looks like I mistook it with deleting auto-renewed domains.

and it's 45 days that registrar has the ability to delete an auto-renewed domain without paying any fees.

Although this allegation was somewhat unclear, we believe it refers to the VeriSign Registry's system for auto-renewals. When a domain name reaches its anniversary date, the Registry's system automatically renews it and adds one year to its contract period. Registrars then have 45 days to delete the registration or let it continue. If a registrar deletes the domain name within the 45-day period, it does not pay for the renewal

I am unclear from the OP whether he did his WHOIS domain search from GoDaddy.com or from another site. GoDaddy's Bob Parsons has been outspoken against domain tasting so I doubt that GoDaddy took your domain. It's just where the taster registered it.

I just assumed all registrars did this. I usually run a whois to see if a domain's taken, and only visit the registrars when it's time to purchase.

Sometimes they offer good suggestions too, but usually not.

(no, I would not like to buy a .name for 49 cents. Thanks anyway)

So true, I have never purchased one of those "suggestions" before...
