It's been quite a while since we've dipped our toes in the SEO waters. Can anyone recommend a good company/individual that we can work with that won't cost a small (or large) fortune?

That's a good question. I suppose it would have to be under $500 per month, until/unless results alowed for a larger budget. I'm checking out getquickseo.com right now.

If you plan to target "web hosting" keywords - don't waste your time if you don't have at least $2,500/month budget for SEO and links.

Here were many competition and in order to be top 10 on "medium web hosting keywords" like "affordable web hosting linux" you need to invest quite a bit.

Of course here will be someone who will say - "Oh, no ! I will do it for much less !" - but reality those people will run "Black SEO" for you, which will gain rankings for short time (few weeks, a month or few months) and then your competitors will "help" your site to be banned from search engine rankings for "using illegal methods".

I do work with SEO companies and we run in this kind of issues all the time - from customer who trying to do it "fast" and "cheap".

Once again, "medium competition keywords for web hosting industry" require budget of $2,500 - $5,000 a month to make it go, but you wouldn't see results right away.

$2500-5000/month would be "breaking the bank" for me currently, hence the reason for this thread....I appreciate your honesty though....

Maybe I should start thinking along the lines of a "Do it yourself" approach. Any pointers on where to start?

I do think for $500 you could get into the top ten on SOME keywords, It really depends on what your trying to target.

I have top ten on some keywords for free, but here is no traffic :)

It's only make cents to do SEO for keywords with at least 3000+ searches a month (for mainstream hosting companies). With CTR of 3-7% you will get some ROI, otherwise it just wasting of time and money.

Also here is no such thing as "self SEO" - in order to get ranking you need to get high-quality links from authority sites - they cost money, a lot of money ($500/month and up for single "powerful" site backlink)

Check for example guys on keyword "web hosting" at Google/Yahoo and their backlinks - the top 10 listings spending dozens of thounsand every month on backlinks alone, without counting other SEO tactics...

There is such a thing as doing SEO yourself. Firstly try to write your content so it includes as many of your target keywords as possible (while not seeming contrived obviously).

As for links, that is difficult. Purchasing links generally gets you nowhere. Google has algorithms to detect purchased links, and they will not count those in your favor. Of course such links will improve your traffic but we're not discussing that.

The most generally you can do is write content with a lot of your targeted keywords, make your site easy to navigate, and advertise your site everywhere you can. I have never found the need to waste money on so-called SEO experts.

Yeah, this strategy is partially correct (about doing pages with content), and it's will work for keywords like "discount cat food san jose", but not for web hosting keywords due to HUGE competition.

You still have to buy links if you want your ranking OR you may wait 10-15 years when and IF your site became so "popular" and "authority" that can gain their rankings without backlinks.

Of course if you plan to buy those crappy links like $10 for PR5 site from this forum "advertising offers forum" - yeah, google know about them and don't give any value for them, but If you know what are you doing and where to buy links (by dealing directly with siteowners) - you can get good backlinks, that will benefit your SEO plenty...

OR you can live in a denial and waiting for SEO miracles :)

I still disagree. google says not to purchase links for SEO purposes, and sets no parameters on that. In fact, ever see the "Report paid links" link in their webmaster tools? Paid links are definiely not the way to go for SEO.

Of course hosting keywords have a lot of competition, but that's why there is such a thing as a niche market.

Yes, you should keep reading what googles says ;) Google also says don't do SEO - so, don't do it. Subject closed.

Curious where you get such a claim as that? That seems a little far-fetched. If we don't follow their guidelines, then how else are we to know how to be ranked well in Google? And who else is going to know better what they do?
