Anyone knows good place for dedicated server hosting that allow IRC with plenty of IPs ? such as burstnet used to offer, because they will not allow IRC anymore after 8/15/2002

i'd have to second that, ircd'd/shellboxes are packet magnets, go somewhere that can handle it, foonet or rackshack (rackshack has the capacity to shrug it off i'm sure). IP's aren't cheap, but neither is the foonet firewall :).

And yes, last i recall the foonet packet filtering firewall was $150-250/mo, can't recall exactly, but it wasn't cheap, and thats not surprising considering the equipment involved.

I have to second that. Foonet/httpd is good.

Even though I do not have a server with them, I have gotten a chance to talk to Paul from foonet. I was impressed.

I also know there is someone reselling foonet server IRC (can't remember the name). Search in the dedicated forum. They may be less expense (or more, don't remember).

its $150 for the firewall and 61 IPs , rackshack doesn't allow irc anymore though

would someone be kind enough to give me the URL to FOONET, because I'm having trouble finding it...:angel:

It's not easy to shrug off all DDoS attacks. Consider this, several packet kiddies have "botnets" of over 4000 zombies...basically they installed trojans on 4000 computers (seems hard to do but it isn't) which are capable of each attacking the target. Now if each computer had 30kbps of upload speed, that'd be 120000 kilobytes per second or almost 120megabytes per second or 960mbits/sec...enough to saturate a GigE line. Then consider that packet kiddies throw insecure Cisco routers into the mix. You're not gonna have a Cisco on your cable modem so 20 insecure routers on T-3s would give another 900mbits/sec for a total attack of nearly TWO GigE lines. Of course this is an extreme case but there ARE malicious people who have this capability.

Yeah I believe httpd/foonet is connected to a few fractional or full DS-3s so they couldn't handle multiple multi-gigabit attack without any packet filtering at the providers, but packet filtering still leaves quite a bit coming through. The firewall you are purchasing isn't going to do anything to stop many DDoS attacks, since they would simply be overhwhelmed by the huge amount of incoming packets. While foonet/httpd is the best when it comes for this type of high risk activity, IRCds hosted at foonet/httpd still go down, that's a fact. I've seen them go down, I've seen all the tools that made them go down.

oh well

it's just not possible to filter ddos out completely. the bandwidth which is thrown at you, has to be mv'ed from something to /dev/null and that's a lot of work if you'r experiencing heavy ddos.

I don't know if they still do but catalog.com did when I was with them.
