ckpeter 07-16-2002, 09:29 PM I am just curious, how do you define "virtual CPU"?
Also, what do you mean by cluster-based?
Peter
HostOnFly 07-16-2002, 09:36 PM Virtual Dedicated Server is a virtual machine so we can define virtual CPU as power equivalent of real CPU.
Cluster based mean that each master-vds server is backed up by slave-vds server. In case of failure on the master-vds, all virtual machines will come up on the slave (looks like reboot).
ckpeter 07-16-2002, 09:40 PM My question was: How do you define it? (ie. what's the mathematic formula you use to come up with the number).
The clustering feature sounds very interesting: care to elaborate? Is the slave VDS on the same server? What kind of failure does it protect against?
Peter
HostOnFly 07-16-2002, 09:51 PM It's just result of testing :)
Master-vds and slave-vds is a physical machines. Each of them hold number of Virtual Dedicated Servers. So, your VDS will be up until master or slave server serving your VDS is up.
ckpeter 07-16-2002, 09:58 PM I see. :) How do you figure out the number based on testing?
I am not quite sure I understand your description of the clustering feature. So are the VDS (master and slave) on the same machine? And what kind of failure is the fail-over going to protect?
Peter
HostOnFly 07-16-2002, 10:18 PM There are no master and slave virtual dedicated servers. The is two physical machins - master-vds-server and slave-vds-server.
This HA cluster will protect your VDS from any hardware and software failure on the vds-servers. But this will not protect your VDS from the software faillures on it (i.e. your mistake in the configuration of web-server).
ckpeter 07-16-2002, 10:27 PM I see. So let me get this staight: The file system is replicated acroess the two physical servers, and when the master fails, the slave simply "boots" off the file and take over, correct?
This is a very nice and interesting setup. I think you will benefit by being more specific so people can see the value of your offer.
As for the "virtual CPU," I am not sure how you get that. Did you just divide the actual Megahz by the number of VDS?
Peter
HostOnFly 07-16-2002, 10:30 PM Your understanding is correct.
It's not so simple to describe, just be sure that you'll get equivalent perfomance.
chrisb 07-18-2002, 09:22 AM I find this really interesting, but everything overlaps on your website. Not all of us use IE. Can you fix your coding to work for Netscape, too? Also, who are your bandwidth providers?
Is your Operating System, freeBSD? What control panel do you use?
Since I have a vds with hostonfly, I think I can answer these...

Also, who are your bandwidth providers?
From the traces I've done, mostly cogent

The OS is FreeBSD. The cp is a custom one that was made in house. It's pretty basic though. It has your server stats, (eg: Available RAM, CPU utilization etc.) It also gives you web-based access to view Apache settings, FTP settings, MySQL settings. You can also add virtual sites and users from within the CP. PM me if you want a screenshot...:)
I'm sure if you wanted to install webmin you'd be able to.
:)
chrisb 07-18-2002, 10:42 AM Thanks for the info, 311. I don't get his 100% uptime though if most of his bandwidth is cogent. Yes, I'd appreciate a screenshot, and does the custom control panel have a file manager?
This sounds similar to a custom freeBSD installation that Motley offered me awhile back.

I'm not too sure if the 100% uptime applies to the vds's, because they are managed by yourself, and anything could go wrong.
Screenshots are coming, check your pm's...:)
edit > no, the cp dosn't have a file manager, you'd have to create a virtual site, then upload the files via FTP.
HostOnFly 07-18-2002, 12:02 PM Bandwidth ptovider for VDS Basic is Cogent. Bandwidth provider for VDS Power is he.net + cogent as backup. With VDS Power you can get high value of uptime because it's running on HA cluster.
