View Full Version : Can AMD do this?
FHDave 07-16-2002, 07:54 PM Besides this reason: http://www4.tomshardware.com/cpu/01q3/010917/heatvideo-01.html
Now comes this: http://www.supermicro.com/PRODUCT/MotherBoards/GC_HE/P4QH8.htm
Those are few reasons why I am still sticking with Intel right now for all of my servers :D
Any opinion?
FiberOptic 07-16-2002, 08:06 PM WOW COOL !!!!
Studio64 07-16-2002, 08:34 PM mmmm..... 32 gigs of RAM........
FHDave 07-16-2002, 08:42 PM yea, you can get up to 10.12Ghz of CPU power and 32GB of memory! Hm ... I hope the next webserver we are upgrading to will be using this board, though perharps not that much memory yet :)

My opinion: BFD.
Big deal. 4-way is nothing.
ThomasT 07-16-2002, 10:16 PM Nice board.. Price would be another matter tho. :)

That's actually my point too :) 4 way is nothing yet AMD is still not up the task to do 4 way SMP :) So ... there goes my thread title :)

Well I hope they solve the over-heating issue (when the CPU Fans fail) ... that's more important than quad SMP in a server environment ... But cool to hear that AMD is doing 4 way soon. Perharps by that time Intel is done with its 8 way Xeon? :)

For $2300 it better be damn cool :D
The older Xeons, I think the P2 ones could do 8-Way.
My point is, that SGI, IBM, and other big iron companies make system that are far bigger than 4-way.
The Alpha architecture, which AMD uses the bus from, supports much more than 4-way.
FHDave 07-16-2002, 11:23 PM $2300?
Try this one: http://www.computerhq.com/store/store-detailspec.asp?goodsid=3295&type=retail
'just' $1999 :)
woa, going from 2 way to 4 is really a big increase ... :)

Well I hope they solve the over-heating issue (when the CPU Fans fail)Newer motherboards come with thermal protection (similar to the P4) which reads the temp directly from a diode in the cpu and shuts the system down when it gets too hot (e.g. if the heatsink fails). Now the systems obviously don't run as cool as a P4, so they won't keep running, but at least it means no more fried chips.

I think I have seen system with 16-way Intel processor.
But actually that's not my pointe... With regards to webhosting needs now, currently what separates Intel and AMD (and I am talking just between Intel and AMD) is Intel's ability to come with 2 way SMP first and now 4 way (for Xeon) whereas AMD still need time to catch up with 4 way AMD XP or AMD MP.
akashik 07-17-2002, 01:14 AM I remember around 200mhz or so they wailer's were predicting 'brown-out' when current technology wouldn't possible be able to support higher speeds.. From memory I think it was aorund 800mhz or so. Hmm, they kind of figured that out along the way. :)

StarGate 07-17-2002, 02:44 AM Do you people know how expensive XEON Processors are?? YOu can get a better solution from AMD for half the money... of course when you "suddenly remove the heatsink" then your ****ed. But hey, I prefer paying half cause heatsinks do not remove themselves by themselfes ;)

that's exactly it... Heatsinks don't tend to drop off by themselves. For all intents and purposes, and AMD chip will work fine, unless you've had a few drinks while building and forget to tighten those screws.

That's a very naive thought and an understatement. What you should really think about is what happen if your cpu fans die all of a sudden? I have had this experience before with my CPU fans (two fans for my overclocked celeron). One of them suddenly just passed out ... Now imagine if that happened to you AMD CPU.
Regarding the price, Intel is not that much more expensive than AMD for the long run. Who cares about the $100/CPU difference?

Have you seen any AMD system with only heatsink on it without the CPU Fans? I have seen this with Intel, especially on supermicro servers where the CPUs only have the heatsinks without any CPU fans and one blower blows air from the side, through the memory slot to the CPUs. Pretty cool :)

It definately isn't going to happen with an XP, MP, or even the Opterons when they're released though.
esdjco 07-17-2002, 11:44 AM Nice MB!
DanielP 07-17-2002, 11:55 AM My Opinion: Over Kill
as-is a dual p3 866 with raid and 2gb of ram could run 99% of all virtual hosting servers... the only reason people buy bigger is
1) they want to stuff more clients on it
2) They want to show that they try and provide their clients the best
but either way a quad system for todays standard virtual box is overkill... wayyy overkill
MadSkilage 07-17-2002, 12:57 PM If AMD tried to do this now, I'd buy one to replace my George Foreman grill ;)
janderk 07-17-2002, 04:59 PM Yeh, should be even better than a single processor AMD to fry eggs on (http://www.handyscripts.co.uk/trubador_egg.htm). :D
