I detest spammers. In Florida, our Game and Fish Commission is issuing licenses to hunt them and thin out the population, just like it does with alligators. I may get a gun and a license just for them.

As much as I detest spammers I realize that some companies spam without intention by hiring spammers who masquerade as legitimate email marketers. Someclaim to have opt-in emial lists that really aren't. That's one reason why my complaints are polite ones. The companies that employ them are victims as much as the recipients of the messages.

I received this apology recently from MyGeek.com after I sent a polite complaint.

It was entitled: Please accept our groveling

Unfortunately, you may have received completely unsolicited
e-mail from myGeek.com and, if so, we'd like to apologize.
Sincerely, brown-nosed-ly, butt-kissing-ly, and truly --
we're sorry.

Marketshare Recovery, Inc. (www.marketsharerecovery.com) was
supposed to provide us with a targeted database of
interested, opt-in consumers who had specifically chosen to
receive shopping-related information. However, they screwed
up and gave us a list that accidentally included an admin
contact list as well. We wanted consumer shoppers... and
what did we get? A bunch of admins! D'oh!

The responsible parties have received multiple wedgies and
swirlies, and they're currently dangling from the doorknobs
to dry off. Please understand that myGeek.com is NOT a
spammer, and we would NEVER intentionally send spam to
anyone. We're throwing ourselves at your feet and begging:
"Have mercy on us! We are only geeks and know not what we
do!"

We hope that we did not cause you too much inconvenience.
We're going to slink away in embarrassment now… Thank you
for not killing us.

good at apologizing over the phone, too.

True, most of the time you don't respond to them. Only when the spammer is a well enough known company do I write directly to them (and usually not at the address given in the spam). For instance, this month I received two spams from separate companies for Pizza Hut. I looked up their corporate site and sent a notice to their Public Relations department asking if they were now serving spam on their pizzas, advising that they had ensured I would never patronize Pizza Hut, and that I would warn others about them. I never heard from them, no apology, nothing.

They didn't lose me as a customer, though I didn't tell them that. There are plenty of other pizza places around, including Papa Johns and some locals.

Most of the time, I simply go upstream and report to the abuse dpeartment of the providers. However, when an otherwise legitimate company spams openly, I let them know how I feel about it.
