How is it some people out there are offering things like 1Gb space and 20Gb bandwidth for $10 or less???
I don't get it. Sure I'm all for being competitive but isn't that just a little rediculous? You would want to hope that web hosting isn't their only source of income

overselling in a huge way i would imagine.
would hate to be on the server that has those accounts on it.

works out good later on - people begin to appreciate good hosts when they find them - as the chances are they have already been burnt ;)

just a case of people who don't work out a business plan before they hang up a shingle. If they sat down and worked out the costs, and the risks of offering so much for so little I think they'd find a lot of red ink on the paper. :)

It's essentially betting.... and these hosts usually have the odds in their favor....
Offer someone 10 gigs of bandwidth, most people have no clue what to do w/ it.
Get 20 customers like that. You're making profits....
Now if all of them create some cult web hit that's taking 1000's of hits a day.... You've got problems and serious costs....
I think I might add "overselling resellers = rolling the dice" in my sig... :D...

The thing about overselling bandwidth is that hosts are very able to cater to all of their clients -- if half the people they host do use all of their bandwidth, they can easily just foot the extra bandwidth bill.
What really worries me is when hosts, with their most basic plan, offer something in the range of 1GB of disk space. You can't just pay more and have more disk space -- hard drives can only be so big.

You can oversell disk space, you just add more drives if you get it wrong.

Aren't you doing your clients an injustice though? If you oversell disk space and "get it wrong" then there is inevitable trouble, down time etc, that leads to the realisation that you got it wrong, then while you add an extra disk or two, the client experiences more down time, causing more anxiety on the part of the customer who just wants their site to work.
RAID would probably help in that regard, but then how many actually have RAID properly set up on their servers?

I wouldn't like to be on a host that _didn't_ have RAID set up properly.
Anyways, you're probably thinking of hot-swap devices instead of RAID.
When it comes to hosting you can always add storage via the network (NFS-mounted) or similar. Even simple servers with only IDE and no extra controllers can actually have quite a lot of disk space. 4 ordinary 160 gb IDE drives gives you 640 gigs of space.... should be plenty for most.

err yeah sorry meant hot swappable drives not RAID. my bad.
