FAQ

What if I was one of the first five people to sign up?
Great! Just make payment as usual and will contact you within 24 hours to get you the new discounted rate for the rest of your time with us.

What is this rsync you speak of?
rsync is a program for *nix systems to synchronize data. Imagine having a server with 60GB of data that you want to back up. With rsync, you only transfer that 60GB once and next time you will only transfer the difference between the old data and the new! It will save you time, money and bandwidth.

Can I use this as my storage space, like a file hosting service?
Unfortunately not. You may back up and restore as often as you like, as long as it's for a legitimate purpose. You may not use this service as an online hard drive.

What is the background of your company?
Talanov Media Inc. is a registered federal corporation under the laws of Canada. Talanov Backup is a subsidiary. The company was registered in January 2006 to provide online services, and owns a number of websites in its portfolio.

Are you a reseller?
We are proud to be a reseller of BQ Internet (http://www.bqinternet.com) who have a reputation for providing quality service. We use their servers and their network, but we offer our own discounted prices and support.

With our prices, and BQ Internet's reputation you have nothing to lose, except the uncertainty of knowing if your data is safe.

If you have any questions at all about our services, please post in this thread.

If you're a BQ customer, just sign up the same way you would ordinarily, at that point you should just be able to run:

# scp ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub <user>@server1.talanovbackup.com:keys/server1
# ssh <user>@server1.talanovbackup.com mergekeys

Then edit your /etc/crontab file to change usernames and server name and you're done. And yes, as of the time of this post there's still a spot for 50% off but of course no guarantees someone won't grab one before you.

Your pricing table ends at 100GB...how much per GB for 200 / 300 / 400 / 500GB?

As per our pricing table: "$15/mo per 100GB increment". So 300GB would be $45 and so forth.

Sorry for sounding noobish, but is "Samba and NFS mounts*" the same thing as what others advertise as "get online instantly after disaster"?

You do not offer an SLA, and nor does BQ, but how secure are these servers? Do they use any kind of RAID? Redundant power? What is the historical uptime record?

Good question - first of all to clear something up, NFS is actually no longer offered and is replaced by Samba as a more secure alternative. It can indeed be advertised as "get online instantly", especially in comparison to restoring via FTP/SCP/etc.

For example, if your whole /home folder is deleted you will have to wait for all the backed up files to be copied back before the server will be essentially usable. With Samba, you can mount the remote directory locally so the destroyed files can be accessed as-needed immediately.

As for the security concerns, I believe these are best answered by Scott from BQ:

We use server-grade hardware and RAID5 storage arrays, so we keep the uptime as high as possible.

When performing a backup via Rsync, data is encrypted and compressed in transit to the backup array. User directories on the backup array are set to be readable only by your username, and connections are logged.

Physically, the backup arrays are located in a locked cage in the Telehouse Broadway datacenter in New York City, and require signing in with 2 different security desks to gain access.
