VPS licence for cPanel is a lot cheaper than for a full server. So how does cPanel differentiate on whether you're running on a full server or a VPS?

Sounds like your wanting to do something illegal, dishonest, and unethical. I cant even believe your asking this question. It amazes me how many people these days do not respect licenses/copyrights (especially overseas). AbbasJaffarali 05-27-2007, 03:38 PM Interesting to see the direction your train of thoughts is headed to. I am thinking about reselling cPanel, however, I would like to know that the people who buy VPS licenses are using it for that without poking into their systems and manually verifying. Uh, who cares. MACscr 05-27-2007, 07:08 PM but thats not really your responsiblity, thats cpanel's themselves, right? The verification process is done by them, not you AFAIK. I could be wrong. Adam H 05-27-2007, 07:29 PM I suppose its just based on a issue of trust? You could just buy your server install Openvz then use assign all resources to your vps. Then you would legally have a cPanel VPS license. MACscr 05-27-2007, 07:55 PM I suppose its just based on a issue of trust? Consider this: A lot of newer processors are now supporting "full" virtualization with Xen... how would any of the control panel systems know if you're using a VPS if you don't have a custom kernel or any other such things? rghf 05-29-2007, 05:50 AM There are other ways of checking. For example if yu do lspci on a VMWare box it will show hardware owned by "VMWare". For xen /proc/xen exists. There are ways of telling if you are inside a VPS even if a lot of it appears to be very close to a dedicated server Chris.S 06-02-2007, 02:59 PM This is what they do. They do a sbin/route and they can see if the ip is a vz protocol or not Maybe 06-02-2007, 05:00 PM Uh, who cares. Sounds like your wanting to do something illegal, dishonest, and unethical. Just remember, this is a forum. Thats what forums are for. If you're curious why shouldn't you ask? When I read his post I didn't think of that. Seems like there is a grey area in respect to VPS/Dedicated licenses. You could set up a dedi as a big VPS.... slouise 06-03-2007, 04:57 PM Why do you guys think the complicated ways. Dedicated box and VPS use different kernel. Each of the VPS technology have their own kernel and does not use the Linux kernel at all. This may be use for verification |
