finally am moving from fdc to atrivo servers, peter the one the server is for and i have to have better speeds than fdc :(

we got the server @ atrivo and its pretty quick and goose is very very nice. i'll post some download tests here in a minute no file to test yet.

but from fdc while pulling our backups we even killed apache on the fdc box and cogent to cogent getiting.

How about gzipping all the files before you transfer them? That should cut down on the time.

peter i think that if you gzip a video file it wont cut it down much if any at all and its got about 12 gigs of videos which is the majority :(

why dont you check your nic card, there maybe a misconfig.

Is it set to full duplex or auto?

Do a "ifconfig" and paste the eth0 here.

its not the speed on the new server i get crazy speeds on it so here is the /sbin/ifconfig on the server @ fdcservers.

The ethernet info above look ok.

Have u ever tried tracerouting back to your own server at fdc, see how many hops there are internally, maybe one of the routers in congested or something.

Have u tried internal transfers? how fast do they go?

ckpeter
07-15-2002, 03:45 PM
Indeed, gzip won't bring you much compression for videos. I have about 5-6GB of videos myself and I once did a compression, there did seem to be a slight reduction in size.

If the speed is so slow though, even slight compression won't hurt.

i expected it to take a while since fdc's pipes are maxed out but as you can see with the speed tests its not the new server

Is that with FTP?

try rsync or some sort of cvs.

I'm getting 42.85 KB/s from FDC from a server that gets 58.96 KB/s from uunet, don't really think your speeds are due to a problem FDC end, unless you are weirdly peered (and hey if you are there's web sites will pay you good money for them pics!) , could always try going through a 3rd server if you own beg/borrow/steal one.

When did you measure btw?

pre friday FDC was a bit wierd (presumambly DOS thing, seemed to be around 2AM UK time everyting died) but since then ping times 1/2ed from previous.

but from fdc while pulling our backups we even killed apache on the fdc box and cogent to cogent getiting.

Not good... but again, it's my side that's messed up.

Hmm... that'll take longer than I expected. I'll come back with the speed and a link if anyone else cares to try.

Someone else suggested VisualRoute... They give me 100% packet loss in the hop just before my server. Why am I not surprised?

Ok... made 2 tests actually.

First one, got the 27meg file via a 256kbps link I got on a small server...

12:56:49 (24.34 KB/s) - `q3pointrelease_131.exe' saved [27803972/27803972]

That's ok I think, considering the link.

2nd test, 100mbps dedicated server...

13:38:18 (24.19 KB/s) - `q3pointrelease_131.exe' saved [27803972/27803972]

That was actually slower :(

Could be your side, but again, I'd bet that the problem is with my dedicated server.

if its the hop before your server then its your servers fault for the slow speeds lol ;)

and thats not as much as i can push out :) all my tests have been way faster than that.

Hi Fellas,

Yeah for sure it's not the servers here, please check your dedicated servers. My cable modem from home maxes out at 350k per sec and I always hit the peak day or night. Also have customers average over 1 Meg per sec and most west coast providers hit 4MB/s.

hehehe amazing what a bad network card can do to your speed:

Here is another example we just tested-

Good Network Card
01:25:29 (7.22 MB/s) - `uumap.tar.Z' saved [8520221/8520221]

Bad Network Card
01:18:58 (453.09 KB/s) - `uumap.tar.Z' saved[8520221/8520221]

So moral of the story is make sure your network card if working!

Here is the full url if you care to test your network speed:

Strange, very strange. On all three of these test links I am receiving sub 10k/s speeds on a 3mbit cable modem. From FDC the same connection pulls around 27k/s, RackShack 260k/s, and Webreseller 360k/s.

But from the Atrivo links -- 8k/s? Maybe there is poor routing to this particular area.
