hello

is been a while that in looking for the right answer ..

thisd question is for administrators :

i have 10 servers :

1. proxy server = windows 2000 ads ( with wingate 5 )
1. web server = windows 2000 ads
1 ftp server = linux red hat 7.2
2. dns servers = linux red hat 7.3 with bind
etc..

all the servers have a local ip address ,
only the proxy server ( im using compaq proliant 800 ) in windows 2000 ads .

my questions are :

1. when some one pointing to my domain name ( www.mydomain.com ) , who is pointing this "call" to the right server ( this domain should goto the web server )
this is another example :

when some one pointing to my domain ( ftp://ftp.mydomain.com )
who should point this "call" from my network .

im asking this question cuz , right now my proxy server donat know how to transfer this call , and then users getting error 404 ( file not found ) .

note :

right now , im having only 1 ip address from my isp , and i dont have router and nat ( only tcp ip ) config .
all the ips is local ip in the range of 192.168.2.X ( only the proxy server have the ip from my isp ) .

- should i buy to every server ip from my isp ?
- if i do , how does its work , cuz when im connecting im getting only 1 ip address ?
- must i put the two dns server in the front of the network ( buing another line for them ) ?

thoes all my question that i have .

if some one can help with this questions , please please please msg me or even send me email to :

well you should read about NAT implementation. This is what you need (unless you want to spend a lot $$$) and buying something commercial. You can run NAT on your existing Linux Box for example..

hello

thank you all for your replay..

yea.. that what i think..
but what is the best , with nat from the os ( like windows 2000 ads ) or buing a good router ?

the money its not the problem .. im talking about hosting some thing as 100 web sites for start .. ( 60% of them using ms sql or mysql )
any way , what im saing is that all the servers is runing 24/7 ,

im using compaq proliant 6500
compaq proliant 7000
compaq proliant 800

all of them with raid 5

so im looking for the best ..
( what is the best for me router or using os config ) ?

- what about the dns servers , must i put the two dns servers in the front of the network?
- can i use local ip`s ( 192.168.2.x ) or should i buy to all my servers ip`s from my isp ?

thank you alot...

Why bother with wingate? Win2k has built in routing and remote-access functionality and i'd gaurantee it works better than wingate.

yes you are right.. i also think so..
win2k is better then wingate( with full bugs and problems )

but must i config the ACTIVE DIRECTORY or can i use nat with out config the ACTIVE DIRECTORY ?

i dont like it .. but if i have to.. where can i learn how to config nat ( step by step .. ) ?

thank alot guy`s ...

well, the easiest way is to get a dedicated IP for each of your servers. Call your ISP and ask if they can allocate you :)

hello

do you mean , that i need to buy ip address for each of my servers ?
and then i need to put each server his ip address from my isp ?

how its work ?
cuz when im connecting im getting only one ip ,

ehat im understand from you , is so i need to buy one ip to a server , and then when i will conect to my isp , i will get more then one ip ( as many as my servers ) .

did i understand you right ?

thanks alot

yes right!

Usually, when you get a dedicated line, you get IP address allocation and in case you need more - you ask your ISP.

If you are on a DSL... and using DHCP.. then you are in trouble..

Well, the most friendly way to do this is to just use NAT. Their is no contact with your ISP necessary and no extra costs for IP addresses. You shouldnt need active directory. Just under the administrative tools, go to routing and remote access. I'm not sure about the step by step. I haven't done this in about a year so I dont remember exactly how to do it. I'm sure a google news group search will help
