Hopefully this is the right place to discuss this but has anyone had success in getting Trixbox installed on a VPS?

I have now tried following set up instructions to the letter to get Trixbox working on a VPS I have but to no avail, the normal ending being I reboot the VPS and it never comes back up!

I know there are people hosting this stuff so I guess it is achievable but HOW!!!!

If anyone has hints and tips (other than those from trixboxtricks where i got the instructions from!) I would appreciate a pointer, failing that someone who knows how to set these up do it for me - what cost would I be looking at?

Why not just install asterisk and be done? You'll get familiar with the real workings of asterisk and you don't have to reinstall your system.

We have Asterisk @ Home running on an OpenVZ VPS with no issues whatsoever. You may need to tweak your configuation a little, but it's certainly possible and works fine for us.

Just wonder how is the quality of service of the VOIP inside VPS solution? Is it clear or will have some lagness in it?

voice and other issues should not be bothered if asterisk properly installed and kernels patched.

FYI: asterisk@home has been replaced with TrixBox, the same company and all.

I have a modified trix installed on a VPS just fine. However I did cheat a little and got someone else to for it for me :-)

I certainly can be done, but you have to watch out for dependencies etc. The main problem was the vps had redhat which had a faux centos install on top of it, so some of the dependencies got screwed.

All in all, it works great, has one IAX trunk and two SIP trunks into it.

You could try just installing CentOS on the VPS first, then get the trixbox ISO, drop it onto disk, and then copy trixbox.tar.gz from the CD to your VPS. You can then untar trixbox.tar.gz and run the install program contained within.

The advantage this has is that it should not affect the basic operation of your VPS - that is, CentOS should continue to run smoothly throughout the trixbox installation process - after all, trixbox is really just additional software, it is not an OS in itself (even though it is packaged with an OS) and so your OS does not need to be disrupted due to the trixbox install.

Installing a VoIP software on a VPS might not have the best idea when the application is not built with VPS QoS in mind. VoipNow can be installed on OpenVZ/Virtuozzo as it comes with application and QoS templates that can be applied on the hardware node. But of course, this is something that your provider must do.

After testing quite a few (we run VPBX's as a business in Australia) we found XEN Server to be the best system to run them on.

Running on VMWare or similar introduced timing issues which although didn't affect the streaming voice when calls were connected, transcoded or bridged caused drop-outs, artifacts and general choppyness in IVR (Interactive Voice Response) menu's.

XEN Seems to have the timing down pat as long as you have a motherboard in your server which supports the virtualization archetecture. (I know the DELL 860's do).

I have Trixbox installed on a Xen VPS. It was actually installed on a full system first, so I just rsync'd / to the VPS partition and it works perfectly.

The only issue I encountered was when I had a PCI FXO card rerouted to the VPS which gave poor quality sound, but when running exclusively on IP it works great. :)
