Hello, I am but a teenager who has been very interested in Graphic Designing for three years now. It's around that time to be choosing a college to go to, but I am not quite sure what I should be majoring in to become a successful graphic designer.

According to many friends, a graphic designer would be in a better position if she were to major in computer science. But I fear that I will not have the education I need for designing for it is more programming oriented than designing. And I've heard it is very hard for graphic designers with an art degree to find jobs as graphic designers.

So I was wondering what would be the best way to become a graphic designer. Any opinions, comments, suggestions would be great. :D

If you want to go into graphic design, the best courses are, suprise, graphid design classes.

Computer science has crap to do with graphic design. It could be useful, however, if you want to use graphic design for web development.

To be a successful graphic designers, major in graphic design. You will learn about not only typography and how to use programs, but also how to deal with printers and printing books, etc. (at least at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design www.miad.edu).

So:
Major: Graphic Design
Minor: Computer Science

Amen! Too many people who want to be designers tend to go into other more "marketable" programs. In the case of a hopefull designer majoring in Comp Sci I think what ends up happening is that you get a lousy programmer because it's not their passion and a lousy GD because they never learned good design principles (besides how to use bevel/emboss and drop shadow filters a zillion different ways I'm not sure you learn anydesign skills in a computer-oriented approach).

Start with the basics... typography, color theory, etc. Also, check out Communication Arts (http://www.commarts.com). If it's not out of your budget, subscribe. Their annuals are great - nothing like looking at good design to inspire good design.
