I have only worked with Compiere; and let me tell you, this is not a trivial task to setup.
I struggled a bit to set it up initially; but the real headache is not actually setting up the program itself (the database, the app server, the web server, etc.) but its actually customizing it to fit the need of the company.
Anyway -- my experience with Compiere is that it is a very full-featured system, handles everything from supply chain to finance, e-commerce, retail/POS, warehousing, etc. However, it has a bit of a learning curve. It is ideally suited to retail companies; and not the service sector (it has a very good warehousing/SCM module.) It is also not designed for the needs of a SMB, but more midsize companies.
Requires Oracle, and a hefty machine to run it on (its Java based). We had a test deplyoment on a machine running Windows Server 2003, 2 GB RAM, 3.0 Ghz P4 and two SCSI disks; and it ran with decent speed for a 5 person testing team; with no more than 3 concurrent connections.
ERP5 (http://www.erp5.com) is another one that I looked at. Built on top of Zope, has MRP features.
