akashik 02-19-2001, 11:07 AM How's this for timing.
I just turned 28 (Feb 20th) all of 57 minutes ago, and now this will be my 500th post here. *yay*
It's looking to be a good day so far :)

Fiber 02-19-2001, 12:42 PM Hey I registered in March of 2000, so I have been hanging around here ALOT!
This is my 119th I think....and my birthday was last week.
Damn this is gonna be such a normal day.

kunal 02-19-2001, 01:25 PM Greg, I thought you were like 40 or something :emlaugh:
akashik 02-19-2001, 02:23 PM Kunal,
No, I just play a 40 year old on TV. :) I'm not sure if that's a compliment or not, so I'll just take it as one *chuckle*

Hey, my birthday was just back on the 7th, and I've been here for months. But this is nowhere near my 500th post, because I only post when I have something very important to say.

Jay, you and your posts have distinguished themselves for their contribution to the topics, regardless of the number of them you make.
I see so much discussion on UBB and vb boards about the number of posts and membership levels, that I have begun to think of this feature as a drawback rather than a benefit. It should be obvious that the quality of a member's posts is important. The quantity is meaningless.
In extreme cases, this can even lead to arrogance and class distinction. A prime example of this is dmoz (Netscape's Open Directory Project). It's unfortunate that so many major search engines use them as the organization is riddled with arrogant, over bearing, smug and insufferable snobs who seem to think that knowledge begins with one becoming a category editor and increases as one attains a higher level.
Anyone can make a contribution to a discussion, regardless of how often or how infrequent they may post.
akashik 02-19-2001, 05:52 PM erm,
I was just mentioning the co-incidence...

Of course I agree with you, and I've probably said as much at least once. But I should point out here that, lack of a smiley notwithstanding, I was joking -- referring to the irony of making that claim in a post about my not-even-today birthday.
(But thanks, Duster.)
Duster 02-19-2001, 07:43 PM I got that it was said with levity and in reference to birthdays, as is true for much of this discussion. All things considered, it just seemed an opportune time to express my views on the subject. I seldom do as I don't want to seem critical of those who post on the subject, nor do I expect it will change them.
On other forums (like one about Star Trek), some of the most frequent posters have the least to say. I make a mental list of those, like you here, who post less and say more. I find them more stimulating.
I also don't use emoticons mcuh because I believe most of the time my meaning is clear enough, at least for thos ewho have been reading for a while (I don't care for the term lurker). They will know that much of what I say is either said with levity or entirely dispassionately, sticking to the facts. Insults and ego gratification are for the immature and intellectually stunted.
