As a web designer, everything you design will have some sort of trade-off or middle ground and screen size/resolution is always one of them.
All of my works are based on 800*600, as it's the most common screen size (currently) and works well across all sizes. This will soon change, now that 17" monitors are almost as cheap as 15".
However, the questions I have are:
a. Usually when surfing the net, is your browser window always maximised or sized to best fit the page width? What resolution?
My usage: When using 800, my browser windows are maximised. When using anything higher, my windows are sized to fit page width (never maximised unless have to).
