I believe that search engine submission services and software are a waste of money. Many promise a top listing with hundreds search engines, but there are only about fifteen ones that receive enough traffic to care about. You can hand submit to all the important search engines in a half hour. With hand submission you know its done correctly and some search engines have programs that catch mass submitters and penalize you. I also believe that it is a waste of time to try to beat search engines via spam like techniques. All the major search engines (except perhaps Northern Light) can detect anything you can come up with and change their ranking algorithm frequently.

By far the two most important places to get listed are in Yahoo and Google. You are likely to get more hits from these two sources than all the other hundreds of search engines combined.
